OSEVELT TALKS SCHEDULED =
2 Week-End Broadcasts to Be Given
Addresses Are Arranged Tomorrow Afternoon; ~ Saturday Morning.
Two addresses by President Rooseyelt are to lend a serious note to the holiday week-end. His speech opening the Shenan“doah National Park tomorrow is to be broadcast at 1:30 by WFBM and
the NBC Blue network, and he will be heard over WIRE and WFBM | at 9 Saturday morning from Monti- | €ello, home of Thomas Jefferson in Charlottesville, Va. Gov. George C. Perry is to introduce the President tomorrow, and also will be a speaker at the Independence Day celebration. Other addresses tomorrow are to be by Secretary of the Interior Ickes and | Wilbur C. Hill, Virginia State Commission on Conservation and De- | velopment chairman. ” » » | Because the political conventions | crowded two of his final three ap- | pearances off the air, Bing Crosby | has decided to continue his broad- | casts through July. When he leaves for his vacation the Thursday | shows are to keep on with Bob | Burns as master of ceremonies, . which was the original plan when | the series was organized last winter. Tonight at 8 (WLW) Bing and Bob are going to offer a radio preview of their new movie, “Rythm on the Range,” assisted by Martha Raye, Frances Farmer and others from the cast. Bing’'s new picture, of course, is'a musical, and several of its songs are to be included in the broadcast. Frank Morgan, screen comic, and the noted concert violinist, Toscha Seidel, also are to be present. Mr. Seidel departed from his classical repertoire last week to play “In My ' Solitude,” during a studio party held when the program did not go on, but he is not expected to play popular music for the broadcast. ” ” ”
Graham McNamee, 15-year veteral NBC announced and pioneer rewsreel commentator, recently signed his third long-term contract with The Times-Universal Newsreel. In 1929 Mr. McNamee instituted’ a new technique for newsreels by adding a sound track of . comments to the pictured events. It led to a minor revolution in the picture industry, and speedy adop- . tion by the other companies. » » ”
~ John D. M. Hamilton, Republican National Committee chairman, is to be heard again at 8 tonight over. WGN in an address before 2500 : s Republicans in Chicago. He was heard last week from New York
in competition with the Democratic |
convention broadcasts. Mr. Hamilton is to establish G. O. P. cam- . paign headquarters in Chicago this week. » Mrs. Edward Everett Hughes, widow of Thomas A. Edison, is to make her first microphone appearance at 12:45 tomorrow on Columbia’s final summer broadcast of the “Boy Edison” series. A new series is planned for fall, = ” » . Ready for his first extensive vacation in eight years, Lanny Ross is to be heard on the Show Boat program for the last time until Aug. 20 tonight at 7, over WIRE. He sails tomorrow morning for a European trip which is to include music study and a visit to the Salzburg Music Festival as well as sightseeing. The Thursday programs will carry on, - however, » » ” - Believe it or not, Bob Ripley is ‘hot in Europe, as this department nnounced last week he would be. | He postponed his trip long enough to go to Dallas, Tex, for a guest appearance with Rudy Vallee at 6 Lupe Valez, also , & guest star tonight, is to come 1 Hollywood for the broadcast. ipley came from New York and has been playing a series of one-night stands from Kansas City down to Texas his week. ” rhe Mutual Bicadcasting System's nouncement of a coast-to-coast ptwork by ‘December finally places company on a real par with NBC and Columbia. Starting two - years ago with an exchange of proel by WGN, WLW and WOR, unior hookup has made reble strides in the face of stiff : tition. ! Stations of the Don Lee Network —KFRC, San Francisco; KHJ, Los Angeles; KGB, San Diego, and KDB, Santa Barbara—are to be the ‘West Coast outlets, with KFELKVOD, Denver, carrying programs in the Rocky Mountain region. - Mutual differs from the other major broadcasting systems in that . it is co-operative. Member stations are the original three and CKLW, Windsor, Ont, Detroit neighbor. Mutual programs

NBC, meanwhile, is going in for | ¢
expansion. Application for a power increase from its present 50,000 watts to’ 500,000 has been made by KDKA, world's pioneer broadcasting station and Blue network outlet in Pittsburgh. This would put it up with WLW, now in a class by itself. The San Francisco studios of NBC are being redecorated and reequipped to come up to the technical standard of the company’s Radio City and Chicago studios.
