NEW YORK, July _1.—Barreld John Leonard (Pepper) Martin, discarded from the National League all-star team for the first tine since the annual extravaganza four years ago, turned back pages of baseball history to #1 to remind a fickle public today t he still is the slugging, sliding ild Horse of the Osage.” Pepper didn't actually say “now ~~ look here, what do you mean leav{fig me off the National League allstars—why I won a world series almost single-handed back there for ¢ Cardinals in ’31.” His answer Ww s a dramatic exhibition that Pepper Martin is one of the greatest “money players” of all time. ‘The fun-loving, harmonica-play-ing Pepper, just as keen, fast and h as ever, combined his wits and brawn yesterday to win a couple of ball games for the Cards. They . Were important games, too. [The ps were down and John L. came ugh. The double-barreied win wer the Pittsburgh Pirates broke i¢ Cards’ first-place tie with the ~ Chicago Cubs and gave them a full game margin of leadership. Thinks Pepper Was Slighted
ie ‘The fact that Pepper was not the " choice of the fans in a nation(de ballot to determine personnel the All-Star aggregations, nor Was named by Charlay Grimm in his five personal selections, probably doesn’t mean a hoot to him. would rather spend his off day kering with his midget - automole racer, anyway.. It remains, however, that Martin deserved a berth on the senior circuit squad if ever a player (did. The “Wild Horse” is batting .317, which is a better average than those of Joe Moore and Mel Ot of the Giants, Arky Vaughan of the. Pirates, or Augie Galan of the Cuks, all of whom were chosen to represent the National. There certainly are no flies on Martin's ability as a fielder, and he leads the league in base-stealing.
Comes Through in Pinches
While Mace Brown handcuffed the Cards with three hits in the first game yesterday, it was Martin's triple which brought his namesake, ~ “Stu” Martin, home with the tying - run, It didn’t take a hit to bring Pepper home. He marched in with the winning tally of a 2-to-1 game after Paul Waner had caught Medwick’s fly. In the second game, with the score 3-all in the ninth and ~~ Moore on second, Martin smote a lusty single to make the score Car- ~ dinals 4, Pirates 3. . In the only other Nati game played, the Gign were dropped to fifth place when they fell 9 to 6 before the Boston Bees. Cincinnati's Reds, who were unscheduled, moved into fourth place, ene percentage point ahead of the Giants. The Philadelphia-Brooklyn contest was postponed because | of wet grounds. ; In the American, the New York Yankees continued their slugging spree and whipped the Boston Red Sox twice, 10 to 5 and 6 to 3. |All other games were called off because of cold and wet grounds.

ALTER HAGEN, sometimes smartly referred to as “the Haig,” took a full 73, one over par, in an exhibition match on the Brookwood course in Fort Wayne yesterday. He teamed with John Sonnenburg to defeat Bud Williamson and Pug Allen, all of Rert Wayne, one up in a best ball match. But the scribes in attendance figured something was wrong —believed the Haig’s score should have been lower than that. They finally attributed the total to a drenched course (glory be, it rained somewhere!) and a high wind. Here's a United Press dispatch that bobbed up today from Florida: TALLAHASSEE, Fla. July 1.— Mrs. Edna C. Hagen, wife of Walter Hagen, the golf master, has won the right to sue him in , Pinellas County Court for allegedly evading payment of $250 a month separate maintenance. The state Supreme Court declined to grant Hagen an order to" prevent Judge John I. Viney, St. Petersburg, from hearing the case. The case now goes to the Pinellas County Court. 2 #2 8 RS. FREEMAN P. DAVIS made some measure of squaring up with Miss Harriett Randall ‘when she triumphed in the Women’s Invitational tournament at the Kokomo Country Club yesterday. Miss Randall finished second, The latter eliminated Mrs. Davis in a semifinal match of the city tourney here last week. With rain slowly softening the [fairways—to say nothing of the contenders’ shoes—Miss Davis rounded out an 81, six over par, while Miss Randall carded an 82.
lowed, Miss Lillian Reese had 84, . Ben Parks 85, and Miss Dorothy Ellis, city champion, 86. Other low local scores included Mrs. I. G. Kahn, 87, Miss Carolin Varin, 88, and Miss Mary Gorham, 92. Mrs. Everett Agnew, Highland, won low net honors with 71, employing a handicap of 30.
WONT vouch for this. I just read it somewhere today. The story goes that a golfer drove off the seventh tee and another off the fourth tee on a course in Manchester, Ia. The two fairways run parallel and in opposite directions. One player sliced and the other hooked. Their balls sideswiped in mid-air—careened back on their respective greens. It’s a great stunt if you can do it.

Discovery and

Old Rivals Listed to Mee at Chicago; Others May Outshine Them.
By United Press CHICAGO, July 1.—The answer to “whose turn is it—Discovery’s or Cavalcade’s?” will come out of the $10,000 Stars and Stripes Handicap Saturday if these blooded champions stay in the running for Arlington Park’s colorful July Fourth feature. They drew top weights in a field of 42 star nominees including Azucar, Whopper, Hollyrood, Nellie Flag, Chanceview, Myrtlewood, Whereaway and Roman Soldier. Af the height of their bitter 3-year-old season, Discovery chased Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloane’s big horse across so many finish lines he was dubbed “Cavalcade’s Shadow.” But the next year, Discovery: became the wonder horse of the season while the luckless Cavalcade wallowed in his wake. The Stars and Stripes, second stake race staged at' Chicago's swanky North Side plant this year, may be the opening engagement of their third tense racing year.
More Weight on Discovery
Alfred G. Vanderbilt’s star, fully rested from a long coast to coast campaign that ended with his breakdown in the rich Santa Anita Handicap, was loaded with 138 pounds to 130 for Calvacade and 122 for H. P. Headley’s Whopper. Far down the list at 108 pounds: was Whereaway, which won Arlington’s Inaugural Handicap in the mud Monday. Moving up rapidly, Whereaway finished just two seconds off the world record for seven furlongs with enough to mark him a threat in the Stars and Stripes.
Hollyrood Likely Choice
Hollyrood, which may turn the 3-year-old championship into Headley’s barns in the absence of Bold Venture and Brevity, became another likely choice with an impost of 112 pounds. Dale Shaffer's St. Bernard, winner of Hawthorne's closing stake at a mile and a furlong Saturday, showed his liking for the distance and Illinois owners look to him to push the great Eastern favorites. St. Bernard will carry 117 pounds. Othersesssigned weights included Roman Soldier, 120; Azucar, 117; Stand Pat, 116; Count Arthur, 113; Good Goods, 112; Nellie Flag, 112; Chanceview, 110; Mpyrtlewood, 110; Psychic Bid, 109; Sabin, 108; Delphinium, 108; Billy Jones, 108; Corinto, 108; Sarada, 107; New Deal, 106; Observant, 106, and Threadneedle, 105.

Gould said he would delay his answer pending outcome of negotiations between Madison Square Garden and the Twentieth Century Sporting Club to stage a BraddockSchmeling bout. The offer, which came from Ancil Hoffman, Baer’s manager, at Dallas, follows: “Should you fail to close for a Schmeling match in New York would you consider a flat offer of $200,000 your end to box Max Baer either in Dallas, Chicago or California late in September? Let me know where I can phone you. Max packing them in or tour.” .

Zulu Nine Carded for Exhibition at Stadium Ball Park
The Zulu Cannibal Giants, a “grotesque-appearing” band of baseball players billed as a noveity act from the South Seas, are to make their first local appearance at Perry Stadium tonight against the Sterling Beer club of the Indiana-Ohio League. In addition to their side-show antics, the Giants reportedly exhibit a fast brand of ball which last year produced 133 victories in 174 contests. The visitors play in bare feet, with the exception of the pitcher and catcher. They usually are attired in straw skirts, and are decorated in tribal war paint and nose rings. The “cannibals” have attracted large crowds during their tour, playing before 55,000 fans in three nights at Montreal, Canada. Manager Clyde Hoffa intends to use the regular Sterling lineup which is a contender in the league this year. Russ ‘Paugh is to hurl for the locals.
