I. U. Bureau of Business Reveals Increase in Pay Rolls, Man Hours.

By United Press BLOOMINGTON, Ind. June 22.— The fourth consecutive monthly ingrease in employment, pay rolls, and weekly man-hours in Indiana was recorded during May, the Indiana University Bureau of Business Research reported today. A decrease in non-manufacturing industries, particularly retail estabishments, was offset by the advance in manufacturing branches, the report indicated. “Local business reports from various sections of the state were almost uniformly encouraging in content and tone during may,” the bureau reported. “Retail trades and industrial lines held a very good level as indicated by the continued above normal position of the general business curve.

Slumps Are Noted

<“Sizable slumps in the building and livestock sales, along with several minor declines in automobile sales, automobile production, coal production and postoffice receipts, were responsible for bringing the general business curve 3 points lower than in April. “However, special notice should be taken of the further increases made in pig iron production and in steel making operations. These items are significant not only within Indiana, one of the leading production centers of the iron and steel industry, but also are considered indicative of general industrial] prospects for the immediate future.” The bureau also interpreted the pickup in electricity generation during the month as a reflection of strength in industrial situation. Manufacturing enterprises in the main made the best showing in respect to output and employment. ‘Back debits and newspaper advertising, both of which are suggestive of general business and retail trends, were higher than a month ago.

Building Permits Down

“The floor space of contracts awarded and the value of building permits declined in May as in April,” the bureau said. “Although this slackening has not yet made itself. felt in the form of a recession of building activity, it does forecast a slowing of activity in the next month or two unless the trend is sharply reversed in June. “In the agricultural sphere, farm! income was relatively good with the outlook for the coming year uncertain. The income from cattle and hog sales was declining but still was fairly high. Crop prospects, however, were not promising. The condition of major crops was considerably below normal with threats of more serious damage in many sections if unfavorable weather persisted. All fruit crops suffered‘ from the severe temperatures of the late winter months.” :

As his famed father did before him, Earl Beatty, Lord Borodale, shown below, will wed an American girl. ‘She is twice-married Mrs. Dorothy Sandes, above, and their engagement will be announced formally soon, the wedding to be in July, accerding to London dispatches. Young Beatty’s mother, wife of the late “Hero of ‘Jutland,” was Ethel, only daughter of Marshall Field, Chicago millionaire.
