roof, James watched a robin building her nest beneath the eaves— watched without interest as he brooded over plans for his uncle's murder. A score of methods he had conceived and discarded as unsafe. Suspicion might fasten upon him as Amos Avery's heir. His harassed brain sought to evolve a perfect crime. It must be accomplished soon, for each speeding day brought nearer the visit of a bank examiner whose audit would disclose his defalcation. He heard his uncle’s step on the porch below, smelled the aroma of his pipe. A uniformed patrolman sauntered along the side street, paused to lean upon the white picket fence and exchange greetings with the old man, whom he had known for years.

No one knows, and everything is fixed at the bank. . . .” - His statement of the case seemed to calm him. He laughed again. Nerve! Only that was needed. An iron nerve. He'd prove himself! A bath in the old man’s tub before he dressed to receive the condolences of evening visitors. In the bathroom, he lighted the gas heater, and his fingers did not shake. He shaved with his uncle's razor while water flowed into the tub. His ‘hand trembled a little,

HEY hurried into the house. “I don't know,” Avery babbled excitedly. “He's in the bathroom. The door is fastened. He doesn’t answer—"’ . They forced the lock. One glimpse of the fallen figure of Amos Avery, and Eagen reeled back, gasping: ¥Gas! Get back!” “But—" James faltered, as they ‘stood beside an open window, waiting for the hall to clear, “the heater wasn't out—" *The fumes, lad! I'll run in and shut it off now, holding my breath—" 3 Eagen returned a moment later. “The vent must be stopped,” he said. “If we could reach the roof, we'd soon see.” “We can. Come on!” The patrolman’s light, when they
