Good Time for Children Sgen “as Parent Aid

Effort to Provide Fun Will Give Dividend, Writer Says.

(Dr. Morris Fishbein discusses - child health, Page 20.)

BY OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON Times Special Writer Children, like their elders, behave if there is a good time to look for‘ward to. If they know something is. just around the corner, like Christmas, it works on imaginations ahd colors the day. Anticipation is the greatest tonic in the world for body and spirits alike. Change from routine is the best pick-me-up I know.. Picnics may bore you, dear lady. Perhaps, too, you dislike bugs; and sitting on stumps or rocks stirs up the sciatica again. But measure these miseries against the benefits

to the family and a certain- harvest |

of better conduct and the scales will

"reverse, 1 think, Fulfillment is a

powerful factor in a child's life; not too much, but not too little, either.

Appeasing Call of the Wild

So—when school is out, neighborhood mothers might do a little |

‘ Planning together. Oh, yes, there | is the church outing and the class picnic and the Girls’ Band swim-

party. and the Boys’ Club holiday. But usually they all pile up about same time and then they're over. It still leaves a summer ahead: and there are the sky, the woods

“‘and the creek still calling over the

Toofs to be seen and enjoyed. Children have a perpetual wanderlust for the open that never quite dis-

“appears.

To announce a family picnic is usually greeted with cheers: the sudden “Let’s - pick - up-something-

* and-go - somewheres - today” * echoes

to whoops: and catcalls of joy. But the social motive is better still. A party is a party, outdoors or in, and besides, when families group

“together it usually helps with trans-

portation problems of those without cars. Summer is the time for neigh-

- borly generosity in this respect.

Know Places Children Go To

*+ Now comes the problem of ‘allow-

ing youngsters to go off on ‘picnics alone. The answer is yes and no.

If. they ‘want to go out to Uncle :

Mack’s farm on their wheels, this dozen: or so enterprising Olympians, or up on the hill behind the house where Jimmy can slide home to get his stone-bruise treated, that’s one

<» thing. Get the sandwiches ready.

But if, unofficered, they want to go ‘off some place that is-only a name to you, that is. another thing, I

- think,

‘Age, naturally, governs privilege

always. - Perhaps the apronstring |:

has to be stretched at times to de-

velop that pride in self-adventure |

that eats up all growing boys, but it is best. to know pretty much of where-abouts. ‘One general rule is

- safe to follow, Know where they are going, know. who is going and"

above al, limit .the time. :

For a change, “porch-lunches” ofl.

“backyard” suppers offer possibilities. And make all participants help. Strange how willingly they'll

‘help when things are different.

‘Well, put them at it. A suggestion to fathers is fo try’ to get together a baseball nine, and on long summer evenings stir up enthusiasm and prowess in their
