“ATTACK BY GAS IS CHARGED BY LABOR LEADERS

“Teacher’s College Professor a Victim, Terre Haute Police Advised.

By United Press TERRE HAUTE, Ind. June 18.— Tear gas attacks on two leaders in Terre Haute labor troubles were reported to police today. Targets of the attack were Prof. John R. Shannon, liberal instructor at Indiana State Teachers College, ‘and Max Schafer, vice president of the Vigo County Central Labor Union, according to the report. Prof. Shannon said he was sitting in a basement study at his north gide home about 8:30 last night when a window above his hedd was broken and cartridges of tear gas fired inside. The professor said he ran outside and saw an ‘automobile speeding away. Tear gas shells were fired into Mr. Schafer’s downtown restaurant late Tuesday night, according to the police. Authorities said they found four cartridges from a .12-gauge shotgun at the scene. Police Chief James C. Yates said he had ordered an investigation.

Emergency Proposals to Set Aside $60,000 Given Reading.

The County Council today held first reading on- three proposed or-

County Surveyor Herbert Bloemker asked $37,000 for road construction in anticipation of revenues from gasoline tax collections. : He said the council budget allowed $110,000 for road work this year, but that the state auditor had infornted him an additional $37,000 would be forthcoming from gasoline tax revenue to Marion County. Sheriff Ray asked $2500 for new cars. He said that four cars had been worn out by constant use, explaining that deputies made 2760 calls last year. Other appropriations were for primary election and delinquent tax expenses. A second reading is to be |: held tomorrow.
