Kinney, Greenlee and Townsend Laud Efforts of Women Voters.

' The lee League of — Women

Voters today made puolic statements received from the three announced candidates for the Demo- ~ cratic nomination for Governor. E. Kirk McKinney, Indianapolis real estate man, said: “I believe that the position of pa-

.. full time to the service of dte and its people. I believe _ that personnel should be examined and classified and placed only in ~ those positions for which their training and experience qualifies them. I believe tnat this can best be done through a personnel department organized, trained and equipped for that purpose.”

Townsend Gives Views !

Lieut. Gov. M. Clifford Townsend said: “The League of Women Voters are to be congratulated and encour- | aged in their noble effort in attracting people's attention to better per- . sonnel in government service. “No home is better than those who constitute it. No ruler or law is useful unless the personnel that administers it is honest, sthcere and aggressive. : “Any problem of government is half solved, or more, when the solution is placed in the hands of competent, honest and sincere administrators. One of the first concerns of any political party should be to place on their tickets men and women of high ability and sin- . cere purpose. So, also should be #the first concern of those elected to office to put in their departments of government, from assistant to Janitors, those whose first concern is for the welfare of the government and of the people. That is not. only good government, but it is good politics as well.

Greenlee Indorses Plan

“Therefore, I want to congratulate your organization again for | helping to popularize in a concrete! manner this most essential element of public service.” Pleas E. Greenlee said: “I believe that government should be operated in a business-like manner, and that any person who holds a

position and is paid with the tax-

payers money should be qualified and efficient. I know that the object and purpose of the League of Women Voters is to bring about a system of dependable and efficient> administration of governmental affairs. “I am heartily in favor of your splendid program and if nominated and elected Governor of Indiana I will do all in my power to see that the ideals of government sponsored by your organization are carried out in Indiana.”

is interested in Gail. She alse frequently sees DICK SEARLES. whose sister, ROSEMARY, was her roommate at - school. or Meanwhile, in Arizona, Gail’s uncle, MARK CHAPMAN, returns heme after years of wandering, and finds his oid home in the hands of the Travers Mining Co. Mark suspects the deal is crooked and gets in touch with GILES HARDING, New York lawyer. Harding Aries to locate Gail. Derek asks Gail to marry him and she agrees. Later a misunderstanding comes between them and LUCILLE TRAVERS, who wants Derek for herself, tells him that Gail ne to marry Dick Searles. > Giles Harding comes to see Gail and tells her about the Travers company’s plot te buy her land, really worth a fortune. Gail's pleasure in learning that she is rich is dimmed by the faet that no word has come from Derek. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

ARK CHAPMAN glanced

around the ranch house. “Well, he said, “this dcesn’t look so bad,

rbut I guess we'd better get some

woman to come in and clean things up a little before our company arrives.”

“I say it's just fine.” Jed Hoskeer stopped to light his pipe. “Reckon the Travers gang haven't got over their surprise yet. But I allus said I'd get even with them—though 1 never thought things would turn out this way. Do you think the young lady will give me a job here? I reckon I'm too old now to be going to live some new place.” “Oh, I'm sure she will”. Mark took a letter from his pocket. ‘She says she feels I've just as much right to the Rancho Angelo as she has, and that I'm to consider it my home as long as I want to stay. That goes for you, too, for, with this lame knee I got coming down the canyon, I can’t get around as good as I used to.”

“That’s fine.” Jed Hoskeer went on with his sweeping. “Though it's too bad about your knee. Maybe if the ore’s as rich as we. figure, you'll be able to go to one of them special doctors and get it fixed up good as new.” “There's the postman and, by gosh, he’s putting something in! the box. See what it is!” exclaimed Mark.

“Just the paper, I guess,” Jed said, tossing the newspaper on the table. “It doesn’t get any bigger, I notice.”

” “? #

RECKON it’s big enough to hold all the news that comes down this valley.” Mark tore off the wrapper. “By gosh,” he exciaimed as he looked at the headlines, “here’s enough news to keep every cne talking for a spell. The Travers comoany has gone smash!” Quick‘'y Mark read the story of the spectacular finish of the mining company. “Seems they took orders on the strength of ore they knew was ‘n the Rancho Angelo and when they couldn’t deliver, some rumor tarted in New York. I guess Cal Travers is a down-and-outer again: Every office is closed up—-my, but that will mean a lot of fellows will lose their jobs.” “Well, it's hard on decent folks, but, for myself, I don’t mind say-

ing I'm glad Cal's got some of'

what's coming to him. He made

that big fortune by a mighty lot of |

crooked deals. Maybe he'll know now some of the bitter taste of the medicine he’s handed out to other folks.” : “They say. a new syndicate may be formed to take over the assets. Well, if they get the right kind of men maybe the little fellows who've put in their best years working for the Travers interests will manage to hold on to their jobs. I hope so.”

UCILLE TRAVERS shook the angry tears from her eyes as she stamped about the luxurious living room of her home. “Don’t speak to me!” she cried. “If you

hadn't poured your money like wa-

ter into Madame Lizette’s shop you might have been able to do some- | thing now! Why were you such a! fool?” “But, Lucille!” Mrs. Travers dabbed at her tired face, devoid for the moment of any rouge or powder | and revealing all the devastating lines of age. “No one dreamed such a thing could happen. Please ‘don’t talk so crossly to me. I can’t stand it.” She dropped in a crumpled heap on a magnificent couch. “Tl talk to you any way I like--and, more than that, I'll kill myself before I'll go out to Arizona with you and Cal. He'll never, never make a comeback. Never now! It’s too late.”

what she’d have liked, but they were her parents. Surely she should ! have some respect for them. But children © nowadays were ashamed of their parents, treated them something awful. Li been a cute little kid when they were in Arizona, before Cal made his big strike. fo Mrs. Travers sighed. What if Cal hadn’t treated her just the way he should during these years he’d ,been so rich? He needed her now, and she was ready to go with him, to help him get a start again. He'd locked at her that morning in a way that had made her think of the day so many years ago when he he had asked her to marry him. Again her thoughts veered to Lucille.. The girl didn’t act as though she belonged to’ them at all. She had no sympathy for her | father, no kind word for her mothier. Mrs. Travers drew in her lips as she tried to. keep them from trembling. taakes and she knew it now. Money was not everything in life. Madame Lizette had certainly dedemanded a lot. ou mean,” Natalie exclaimed, : | “that I'm invited to go with" you to ‘Heart's Delight’ for the week-end?” Gail nodded. “Yes, I cathe to straight home. Rosemary is calling for us tomorrow about 10 o'clock.” “And we'll drive out with her in her Rolls-Royce?” Natalie’s voice quivered with excitement. “Yes. | She thought it would be nicer than going out by train.” “Nicer! Oh, Gail, this is overwhelming. I can hardly realize that I'm stepping into society!” “But the Searles are very plain people, Natalie. I hope you won't be disappointed. Don’t think you're going to eat off gold plates or have peacocks’ tongues for dinner! You'll like Mr. and Mrs. Searles, though, for they're so genuine.” “But I can’t understand why they should be asking me to spend the week-end with them!” “I guess you made a good impression on Rosemary,” teased Gail. “And they appreciate the fact that you've been so sweet to me. Let’s hurry now, for I've got to fix my bathing suit belt. I broke the buckle, but I found .quite a ‘goodlooking one that I can use.” “I'm so thrilled! Sweltering in the office I almost hated the thought of tomorrow and sitting around in my room, but now—if I weren't walking down the avenue I'd i dance a jig!” It was just striking 10 when the Searles’ limousine drew to the curb before the clubhouse next morning and Rosemary entered the building. : “Tell Miss Everett I'm coming right | up to see her,” she told the clerk.

What else could she do?” “It’s. too bad she didn’t marry that count she was bragging about, for her father would probably have settled a fortune on her,” remarked Rosemary. - “Perhaps she’ll take up designing seriously now.” suggested: Gail. “And step into your shoes at Madame’s?” asked Natalie. “But. girls, maybe Madame Lizette’s shop is gone, too.
