Chicago Cubs Cut Cardinals’ League Lead

By United Press 83 CHICAGO, June 12.—The Chicago Cubs were out to win their ninth straight baseball game today, but Manager Charley Grimm will have to spur his elub toward a better showing on the road if he hopes to be a contender for the National League pennant. If the Cubs win today they will tie the season record of nine consecutive victories compiled by the Giants last month —in turn = the longest since the Chicagos ran off 21 straight last fall, Grimm has : his pitching staff in now; starters winning regularly — Lee, ; Warneke, Henshaw, French, Da- = Grimm vis, ‘Carleton. Lee and Warneke is the order in which Cub hurlers have started and finished in winning their last eight games.

Shine at Home

There is an old baseball axiom that a team has to play .500 or better ball on the road if it hopes to win the championship. The Cubs played at a .558 clip away from home in winning the flag last year, but their showing this season is not nearly so impressive. They have won only seven out of 18 road games for an average of 388. Wins in 21 out of 31 at home in their in

one-half games behind the leagueleading Cardinals. Bill Lee chalked up his fifth win of the year as the Cubs turned back the Boston Bees, 6 to 4, yesterday, to gain a full game on the Cardinals who were walloped, 12 to 4, by the Philadelphia Phillies. The Cincinnati Reds won their second night game of the season, 4 to 3, over the Brooklyn Dodgers. N FIRS T DIVISION

Tribe Bat Battles for 500 Mark in Flag Race

Redskins Outlast Saints in Series Opener as Sharp Stars in Box.

The first division is not far away! The Indians are beginning to see daylight in the A. A. flag race and are sharpened up to drive for a position in the charmed circle. They knocked off the fourth-place SaintsY in the series opener last night, 7-5, and gained a full game on the No. 4 team of the league. The Northmen are now four games ahead of the Tribesters and a sustained winning streak by the Hoosiers woula bring about a big shakeup in the standings. Gabby Street's tossers are here for four more tilts and if the Redskins can keep going there will be plenty of excitement Monday when Ownie Bush's Minneapolis Millers, 1935 champions, roll into town.

Colonels Rap Millers

While the Hoosiers were bowling over the Saints the Louisville Colonels took a fall out of the thirdplace Millers and Toledo spiit even in a twin bill with the second-place Kansas City Blues. Milwaukee, in the No. 1 spot, and Columbus, running fifth, were rained out. Altogether it was a fine day yesterday for the second-division teams. A relief hurler was the hero at Perry Stadium last night. Bud Tinning was having a mess of trouble trying to stifle the St. Paul attack and in the sixth was compelled to take a walk under fire. . In the absence of Manager Killefer, Acting Pilot Mickey Heath turned the toil over to young Jimmy Sharp, the red-thatched southpaw. And the rockie delivered in big league style. As a matter of fact the first man he faced was Joe Mowry, just down from the majors.

HEN the St. Paul Saints were galloping in the sixth inning last night at the expense of Bud Tinning, and after four runs had been cashed in during the rally, young Jimmy Sharp (above) went to the Tribe mound with the bases loaded and two down and struck out Joe Mowry, late of the big Jimmy put on the brakes and held the Apostles to two hits and no runs the remainder of the way, which enabled the Indians to annex the

leagues.

District Golf Title Playoff Slated Today

McGuire, Buell in 18-Hole Medal Encounter at Meridian Hills.

Johnny McGuire of Hillcrest and Max Buell of Greenfield were to square off at the Meridian Hills Country Club course today at 2

Indianapolis District golf champion. The two veteran linksmen were deadlocked at the conclusion of the three-day 54-hole medal firing

Wednesday afternoon. Today's contest was to be medal play on the same course on which the regular

play terminated. On previous days, the field of approximately 195 had contended at Country Club and Speedway. ~The veteran Buell who captured the 1933 diadem forged into a tie with McGuire on the final day. when he carded six birdies for a 72 while McGuire was taking 78 strokes, Buell’s ability to get around the long

and difficult Meridian Hills course gives him what slight edge may be gleaned in selecting today’s winner, Sensational recovery shots and long-distance putting in the stretch gave him his low score. McGuire, never sensational, never rattled, isa seasoned performer and is considered a good “money” shooter when the pressure is applied.

series opener. He striick out four in three and onethird innings and two of the strikeouts were registered in the ninth when the visitors were making an effort to pull the game out of the skillet. It was a fancy exhibition of relief pitching. The “kid” lefthander was cool on the mound and went about

the business in the fashion of a seasoned performer. Acting Manager Mickey Heath made a wise choice * when he called the slender redhead to the mound.
