D rector of ‘Fury Be eves Action Should Be Pictured, ‘Not ‘Explained, by Actors

‘Roving’ Camera Method Adopted by European Expert! Give Audience Details of Events Which | Characters Talk About.

BY JOHN W. THOMPSON Hollywood actors should not have to explain their actions in films

with elaborate -dialog, according to

director, whose most recent picture, “Fury,”

morrow,

Fritz Lang, distinguished - European is to open at Loew's to-

The action in a film should explain and describe what the actors » say during that action, Mr. Lang says. “The most effective dialog is that which can be illustrated so that your audience can see what the players are talking about,” the director

explained to Spencer Tracy, stars of “Fury,” on the set recently. . ‘ Mental Picture Important

“For instance, obviously you receive a greater emotional response from a friend’s description of something that happéned in a burning building if you saw the burning ‘building yourself, and know how ‘exciting ;and’ dangerous it was.” “It builds a mental picture that . mo amount of words can convey.” By the same process, according to the Viennese director, a situa‘tion presented pictorially can later ‘establish perfect insight into a character by showing his or her reaction’ (through speech) . to the preceding camera shot.

“Adagio” Camera Director

“I have been called ‘the man with the adagio camera’ and a lot of ‘other fanciful names,” Mr. Lang said, “because I believe firmly that you can't make motion pictures merely by planting your camera in front of the players and letting them tell the story.” “That is the novelist’'s domain, and to a lesser extent, the play‘wright's. I think that the tendency to strain for so-called smart dialog at the expense of movement, action or flux, or whatever you want to ‘call it, has been tremendously overemphasized by Hollywood directors.” Mr. Lang admitted it is the prov‘ince of the stage to take advantage ‘of the physical limitations of time and space in presenting drama. But, he said; there is no excuse for the movie because the camera can go anywhere, take the audience right along. Lang produced “M,” “Metropolis,” “The Girl in the Moon” and other European successes. He has employed the same “roving camera” idea in the filming of “Fury.” Loew's second picture starting tomorrow will be “Absolute Quiet,” «starring Lionel ‘Atwill and Irene ‘Hervey.

$38 763 Grossed by 8 Cornell Showings

Katharine Cornell recently completed eight performances of “St. Joan” at the Boston Opera: House ‘to gross receipts of $38,763, net. © This amount broke the previous ecord for eight days of drama, held by John Barrymore's “Hamlet.” Miss Cornell's own previous recrd had been in the smaller Forrest . Theater, ' Philadelphia, where she played “The Barretts of Wimpole Street” for eight days to the monetary tune of $33,657. Miss Cornell's drawing power is considered owing strictly to her ability as a stage actress. She has no movie following or radio ‘“audience” to draw from. Her play is nothing sensational or new, but a revival of the old Joan of Arc drama. ' |
