Chubby Dean .Clicks as A’s Pinch Hitter

Former College } Hurler Again : Hits in Emergency to Aid in Win.

‘ By United Press » _ NEW YORK, June 9.—A new star

. called Lovill (Chubby) Dean joined the glittering Dizzy and Dazzy con- " stellation today. Chubby is pinch- ‘ hitter extraordinary of the Phila.delphia Athletics. * Fresh from the campus of Duke - University, he joined Connie Mack's

club during training at Fort Myers * this spring. He made a great show‘ing down there, but the master“minding Mack hasn't been able to . decide whether he wants to make «an infielder or an outfielder out of “him. So far he has warmed the “bench except for an inning or so -at first base and pinch-hitting roles. Dean has either won or saved five games directly, getting nine hits—four doubles and five singles —+to drive in 11 runs in 22 times at bat. He was a pitcher down at Duke, but he is hitting the ball at 2 409 clip for the Athletics. And: every one of his safeties has come in “the clutch,” when he was pinchbatting for some one else. wi. Yesterday he saved the A’s game "with the Chicago White Sox, com‘ing through with a two-bagger with two on base in the ninth. The blow brought both of them home to deadlock the. count 4-all and enabled the Athletics to go on and score the winning run in the tenth. It ‘marked the fourth consecutive time that Dean came through in the pinch when the chips were dewn.

Gehrig, Di Maggio Star

The New York Yankees smashed out a 12-to-3 decision over the St. Louis Browns to increase their American League lead to three . -games. Di Maggio with a homer, Ztriple and single and Gehrig with a homer, double and single paced the Yankee 16-hit attack. They . drove in sight runs. The second-place Boston Red Sox divided a twin-bill with the Detroit Tigers, winning the first 6 to 3 with the world champions taking the finale 12 to 7. Lefty Grove scored his ninth win in the opener as Jimmy Foxx hit his fourteenth homer of the yéar. Elden Auker was the winning pitcher in the nightcap. Cleveland at Washington was rained out. In the National League the leading St. Louis Cardinals—who were "idle—gained a half-game as a re- _ sult of the Giants’ loss to the Cincinnati Reds, 7 to 3. Paul Derringer. scored his sixth | victory, scattering 10 hits. . Larry French turned.in an eighthitter to give the Chicago Cubs a 3-t0-0 shutout over the Philadelphia Phillies. Only one of the Cub runs was earned, the other two the re“sult of errors. | "An error by Linus Frey in the ninth with the bases loaded opened the way for the winning run that gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 2-to-1 ‘decision over the Brooklyn Dodgers.
