“Dyke's Chicago White Sox are way down just at the moment, but they are a long way Irom being out. Combining some fine pitching with base hits, they hope to get. back into the winning stride with which they started the season. With a flying start, the Chicago's Stabbed the league lead on.openday and held it for a week, after which they slowly dropped into the second division where have finished for the last 15 years. But from sixth

The game was ably pitched by Young Johnny Whitehead, a second-year man, who quieted the Yankee artillery with four base hits, while his mates were pounding Pearson, Broaca, Brown and Kleinhans all over the stadium. Rip Radcliff, who has forged up among the first five batsmen of the majors with an average of .369, led the White Sox attack with two singles and a home run.

Red Sox Swecp Indians

The loss cut the Yankees’ league ~ Jead to two and one-hali games over the Boston Red Sox, who made it three straight over the Cleveland Indians with a 4-to-3 decision yes- ~ terday. Lefty Grove, his split fin- - ger healed, marked up his eighth win. Werber’s double, scoring Man- ~ ager Cronin, was the winning mar-

The Detroit Tigers unmerciiessly drubbed the Philadelphia Athletics, 18 to 9, to climb within a half-game of thiad place. A 10-run rally in the third, in which 14 men went to bat, was climaxed by Manager Mickey ~ Cochrane’s homer with the bases crowded. Near-perfect pitching in the pinches by Elon Hogsett, who dis-; tributed 10 hits, enabled the St.| Louis Browns to salvage the finale of their three-game series with the - Washington Senators, 6 to 2. The Brooklyn Dodgers managed to take one out of three from the St. Louis Cardinals, Natiorfial League leaders, when they nosed out Paul . Dean, 4 to 3. Although Dean pitched only two innings, he allowed the Dodgers to come from behind and score two runs in the eighth on a ~ sacrifice and singles by Bordagary, Watkins and Bucher.

Ott Cracks Two

The second-place Giant$ failed to ‘ gain ground, falling before Lon Warneke and the Chicago .Cubs, 8 to 5. Ott homered twice for: New York but they proved futile in the face of Chicago's 18- hit attack off four hurlers. Pittsburgh kept a tight hold on third place by defeating the Boston Bees, 7 to 5. Manager Traynor benched Hafey and gave Paul Waner the right field job, Waner responding with two hits. Cy Blanton - Scored his third win. The loss dropped the Bees from fourth place which was taken over by the Cincinnati Reds, who won out, 5 to 3, over the Philadelphia Phillies.

” = » EN HOY, president of the local public links association, wants to stage the first state meet this year. Yesterday he applied to the park board ior permission to hold the event al Coffin Sept. 14. Board members instructed him to present a list of Indiana cities having public links. Members seemed favorable to tne proposal. 4 2 . OME of the Heys are having a hard time stalling the boss on selecting the dates for vacations. One of the main reasons is that the dates have not been announced for the state amateur meet at Terre Haute. Secretary Jesse J. Mossler has arranged a meeting at Terre Haute next Wednesday when several days in August will be signaled for the event. :

OBBY CROUCH. ® Mandal High School's ace linksman, has concluded his prep career and will enter the state junior and amateur championships this year. Bobby is headed for college next year, and he has memorized more golf records than curriculum outlines in ‘the catalogs. His 74 was second best in the state high school tourney. From Tech's brilliant band of state champions should come new names among the leaders in the junior and amateur meets. Arthur Wettle, whose 176 paced the Big Green squad to the state title;

o | Wayne Montfort, Richard Martin

and George Urquhart probably will enter the summer meets. 2 » ” HE qualifying round of the Highalnd ladies’ spring handicap tournament will be held today. Match play will be conducted three days, starting next Wednesday. There is to be a low net qualifying award. Prizes are to be given to the winner and runner-up of each flight and to the consolation winners and runners-up.

Frank Brown and O’Shocker Paired

A test in fast company is to be provided Frank Brown, 220, the popular Wichita mat ace, on the Hercules A. C. outdoor wrestling card at Sports-Arena next Tuesday night, when the young brother of

If Orville Brown ‘will swing into ac- ; tion against Irish Pat O’Shocker,

235, nationally known heavy from Salt Lake City. The pair will “clash in the semi-windup. Young Brown has appeared here twice, winning both times out, and has established himself as g comer. O’Shocker has been absent from local warfare for several months, having been engaging in action on the West Coast. A third match between Pat (Black Secret) Fraley, 220, the Nebraska farmer, and Gus Sonnenberg, 220, former heavyweight king, tops the program. When Pat was attired in a mask and parading as the “Black Secret,” he went undefeatec in nine matches and listed Gus as one of his victims. In a sec-

ond encounter, the Nebraskan was

disqualified against the former title holder. ' An opening bout is to be arranged for Tuesday and y will lift the’ curtain at 8: 30.

Gimbel Award to Caldemeyer |=.

Evansville Athlete Honored at Indiana; Shines as Hurdler.

Times Special BLOOMINGTON, Ind, June 5. —One of Indiana’s highest athletic

honors, the annual Gimbel award, |

will go to Daniel F. Caldemeyer of Evansville, ace hurdler and high jumper on the Indiana University track team. Caldemeyer, who is serving his third year as a regular on the varsity, is rated as one of the outstanding hurdlers in collegiate .competition, and holds the Big Ten and American record for the indoor high hurdles. He will receive a gold medal and the interest on $500. The Gimbel award is given each year at Indiana to the junior or senior trying out’ for an athletic team, “for merit in habits, college spirit, applicaticn and sincerity.” The awards are given by Jake Gimbel, formerly of Vincennes, now of Hollywood, Cak- Similar awards have been established by Gimbel at the University of California, Stanford, Southern California and the University of California at Los Angeles. Gimbel also each year gives the coveted Gimbel prize at the Indiana State High School basketball tournament. The Gimbel medal was won last year by Willard Kehrt, now coach at Madison (Ind.) High School. Caldemeyer is the second Evansville track athlete in recent years*to win the prized award. Charles Hornbostel of Evansville, famed middle distance runner and member of the 1932 Olympic track team, won the award in 1934.

Although Larry Snyder, Buckeye track coach, prefers to have his lithe compete only in the 100 and 220-yard dashes and the broad jump, pressure of competition with such strong teams as Notre Dame, Indiana and Pittsburgh may lead him to a last-minute decision to send Owens into the 220-yard low hurdles as well. : Since this hurdle event is not included in international .competition, Snyder hoped to exclude it from Owens’ pre-Olympic training.
