Three Refused Leniency as

State Board Frees . Fourth Man.

A parole petition of Alfred Linne, who is serving a 15-year sentence in the Indiana State Reformatory for alleged participation ‘in a series of holdups of Indianapolist bus drivers, today had been denied by the State Clemency Commission, Linne was sentenced in 1033. Acting yesterday, the commission also denied a parole plea of Victor “Benjamin, sentenced to 10 years from Marion County in 1933 for alleged participation in the robbery of an Indianapolis home. William Scott, who was sentenced in Marion Criminal Court in 1931 to 10 years for burglary, was granted a parole. James Leech, serving a 10-year term imposed in #931 for automobile banditry, was granted a commutation of sentence, making his term six to 10 years. Lawson Jacks, another local ~ prisoner, serving 10 years for rob‘bery, was denied a parole. He was sentenced in 1932. James W. Bayes, sentenced here in 1932 to 10 years for robbery, was paroled to Michigan authorities, who wanted him for parole violation. The Clemency Commission granted a total of nine commuta- ‘ tions of sentence and eight paroles and denied 25 petitions.

By United Press NEW YORK, June 4.—Marcel, retired Parisian hairdresser and inventor of the hair waving process bearing his name, died Tuesday night at his Chateau of Thiel in France, it was announced today. He was 84 and had lived the last 39 years of his life as a gentleman farmer. His invention of the Marcel wave at the end of the nineteenth century made him a millionaire. ; Born ‘the son of a stone mason, Marcel rose to international fame. After retiring from the hairdressing business in 1897 he was hailed like a king wherever he traveled. Women flocked to him after his process became popular. Competition for his work rose rapidly, with women bidding 200 to 3090 francs for as little as 25 minutes of his time.
