lumbia to Present Gracie Allen, Lily Pons as Its Share of Evening’s Entertainment; Little Opposition Is Shown by National’s WJZ Division.

BY RALPH NORMAN WEEK schedules disclose that NBC-WEAF has Wednesday evening booked with four of the network's most popular current pro- , Offering little competition on its WJZ division, NBC through ; WEAP circuit dominates Wednesday evening programs with One ‘Man's Family, Wayne King’s orchestra, Town Hall Tonight and Your Hit Parade, providing three hours of excellent variety entertainment.

CBS stations, however, are not ‘without listeners on Wednesday nights, though, for there's Gracie Allen in an early evening broadcast, and Lily Pons with Kostel‘anetz's orchestra provides a program that is popular with many listeners. » #“ i

‘It seems queer that although One Man's Family, NBC-WEAF (WLW) at 6, was voted by the Women’s Radio Committee as bést of radio perials, the continuity of the show currently is concerned with difficult snarital entanglements. Tonight's program will find Phillip Spencer invading the Barbour home for a talk with Beth, from whom he seeks a divorce. One Man's Famfly originates in NBC’s San Francisco studio and is played by Anthony Smythe, with Minetta Ellen, Michael Raffetto, Bernice Berwin, Kathleen Wilson, Barton Yarborough, Page Gilman and Winifred Wolfe. ” td o WIRE is to air Wayne King’s con- - pert of popular music at 6:30. Fred Allen, Portland Hoffa, the Mighty’ Allen Art Players and Peter Van Bteeden’s orchestra, may be heard ~ through WLW at 7. WLW also will air Your Hit Parade at 8. Tonight’s concert is the last for which Al Goodman will wield the baton. . Your Hit Parade officials will " allow no director's name to become too closely associated with their program. For this reason, ‘there is a new director every three or four months. Beginning tonight Your Hit Parade will be aired by the WEAF and WJZ networks of NBC and WLW. CBS and WFBM carry the Saturday night dition of the program when Fredglie Rich directs.

” ” ” Local listeners hear little about fhe Mutual Network and its enterprises, except for WIRE'S Morning ~ Matinee which is wired to -Indian@apolis by Mutual. The network, " however, “scooped” all other broad‘casters with an announcement at B:50 Monday morning that the ‘Queen Mary had been sighted. - Joe Tobin, WOR staff member, was at the microphone in an airplane to gnake the announcement. Mutual has reported that eight women radio stars have risen early for the Morning Matinee, WIRE at 7 tomorrow morning, and none have been late. Irene‘Rich drove to New ~ York at the break of day from Conicut; Kate Smith drove in from Long Island, and several others traveled distances to sing before breakfast. ”

» ” Mutual, on WIRE at 7 tomorrow g, again will “scoop” the net- - works by presenting Sir Edgar Brittan, commander of the Queen Mary for his first American radio program appearance. He will be interviewed by Nellie Revell, newspaper woman Who conducts the Morning Matinee. ‘Also on tomorrow’s breakfast program will be Helen Jepson, Metropolitan Opera star, and Carl Hoff's orchestra. » ”

” CBS will air two political talks today, the first at 5:15 in which W. M. Bingay, Detroit Free Press editorial director, is to advocate Alf. M. Landon’s nomination for President by the Republican national . convention next week, and a second at 8:45 when Gifford Pinchot, Penn- ~ 8ylvania former Governor, is to discuss issues facing the Republican ~ gonvention,

» t 4 ” 2 RADIO FOOTNOTES—Lily Pons, radio, Metropolitan Opera and movie singer, took no voice lessons until 10 years ago. She was trained. when young to be ® concert pifnist,

Ken Murry, Tuesday night CBS comedian, has had proposals of marriage from listeners in every state but Nevada and South Carolina. Have you noticed that with the exception of Rudy Vallee, no radio star has been publicised for

WLW FIND

Singing in church choirs and school glee clubs gave Adrian O’Brien (above), featured WLW singer, his start. WLW talent scouts believe Mr. O’Brien is the outstanding discovery of the season at the Nation’s Station. He is heard frequently at 4:15 in the afternoon, and sings regularly each Monday night on the Crosley Follies program.
