Sunday Morning Study Hour Is to Note Special Occasion.

BY RALPH NORMAN Religious groups, it seems, lead local organizations in making Indianapolis radio history. One of the oldest programs in the country, with 500 consecutive weekly broadcasts, is aired by the Christian Men Builders Class of Third Christian Church. Cadle Tabernacle originates the only local daily program presented on a major network. On WFBM at 9:30 tomorrow morning, members of the Christian Men Builders Class will celebrate the five hundredth broadcast of their Sunday morning study Polio No network programs boas? of 10 years’ continuous running, and few programs have such a record on ifdependent stations. The first program by broadcast in November, 1926, when WFBM was a small station. The Sunday morning talks by Merle Sidener, teacher, now are carried to listeners in all parts of the state by WFBM'S new 5000-watt transmitter. The vast radio audience includes several listening groups in homes for aged persons and hospitals. Guests of the Christian Men Builders Class tomorrow morning are to include Frank O. Sharp, prom manager, and Roy Blossom, manager, of WFBM. ” ” sn

The Cadle Tabernacle’s Family Prayer Period is broadcast by the Mutual Network and WLW at 6 each week-day morning, and Sunday morning services at the tabernacle are at 10.

Listeners who have followed the progress of the S. S. Queen Mary will be interested in broadcasts which will welcome the famous liner to New York. At 5 tomorrow afternoon CBS (WFBM) broadcast the last-night-out party, with Don Ball, CBS announcer, as master of ceremonies. : Extensive plans have been made to describe the docking of the giant ship. As in other gala affairs, programs will originate from airplanes, from the ship itself, and from points along the ship's route into New York Harbor. Programs by CBS, NBC and the Mutual Network Monday morning will carry descriptions of the ship’s arrival. Among the famous people who will welcome him to Hollywood tomorrow, says Jack Benny, will be the family that lives across the street from Greta Garbo’s uncle, the first cousin of the man who delivers milk to Shirley Temple's house, and a fellow who once had lunch at the Brown Derby at the same time as Clark Gable. To hear about this gathering of celebrities, tune in the Benny antics at 5:30 tomorrow afternoon, CBS (WFBM). tJ ” = A four-hour program of dance music, a salute to Guy Lombardo’s new Mutual Network dance programs, is to be aired by Mutual, 9:30 to 1:30 tonight. WLW is to carry part of the program, which including music by Shep Fields, Horace Heidt, Joe Sander and Kay Kyser and their bands. Radio Footnotes — Fred Waring : likely will renew his contract for a summer, show, and Frank Fay has a 30-week contract pending with his current sponsor. Dick Powell is scheduled to return to Hollywood Hotel next riday night. Not even Fred Allen's closest friends know where the comedian will spend his sumer vacation — somewhere in Maine is all they know. Only Ken Murray and Ed Wynn, of the comedians, will stay on the air all summer, Ed is trying to regain the large audience he once had. Bob Burns.isn't the only bazooka blower in the business. There's another named Jack Gillette, who toots his weird instrument on WNEW’s late dance programs. Paul Whiteman's Sunday night Varieties, NBC-WJZ (WLW) at 7: 30, get bigger and bigger. Now the King of Jazz crowds Frank Parker, Judy Canova, hill billy songstress, Ramona, Durelle, King’s Men, Jack Teagarden, plus four child amateurs into a 45-minute program. Consequently, the excellent Whiteman band is heard very little.

Youthful Operatic Singer Claims Degree Proof He Is Musician.

BY JAMES THRASHER Instrumentalists delight in claims that singers are not musicians, and

in aspersive remarks directed -at their general intelligence. Joseph Bentonelli, however, spikes their guns with the fact that he was graduated from the University of Oklahoma with its highest honors and a master’s degree in music. After graduation, Mr. Bentonelli (Joe Benton to the folks back in his native Oklahoma) spent two years in Paris as student of the great tenor, Jean de Reszke. Then followed three years of operatic coaching in Ifaly, and a triumphant debut as Alfredo in “La Traviata,” at Bologna in 1928. In 1934, the singer returned to America from many successful European appearances to sing with the Chicago Civic Opera. Still in his early thirties, and concluding his first season at the Metrapolitan, Mr. Bentonelli has to his credit some 512 appearances in more than 50 operas. He is to sing on the Ford Hour tomorrow night with Victor Kolar and the symphony orchestra, at 7 over CBS-WFBM. His selections include “Salut Demeure” from Gounod’s “Faust,” “Ah Fuyez” from “Manon” by Massenet, Handel's “Where’er You Walk,” and songs by Wolfe, Schneider and Bartlett.

Another California concert is scheduled for the General Motors hour at 8 tomorrow night, on the NBC Red network and WIRE, with Rosa Ponselle again appearing as soloist. This time the concert is to be held in San Francisco, before 3300 invited guests at the War Memorial Opera House. Erno Rapee will conduct the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in works by Wagner, Bach and Richard Strauss. Mishel Piastro, concert master of the New York Philharmonic-Sym-phony and General Motors orchestra, is to share solo honors with Miss Ponselle, playing the “Praeludium and Allegro” of Kreisler. It will be something of a homecoming for the renowned violinist, since he formerly was concertmaster and later conductor of the San Francisco orchestra. Miss Ponselle is scheduled to sing the “Divinites du Styx” from Gluck’s opera, “Alceste”’; Schubert's “Ave Maria” and the “Seguadilla” from “Carmen”; - Tosti’'s ‘“Marechiare” and “Annie Laurie.” “8 » »

An all-Russian program for tomorrow’s Radio City broadcast has been chosen by guest-conductor Rex Dunn, former director of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. WLW is to carry the NBC-WJZ program at 10:30, as usual. Concerts devoted to Russian compositions are by no means new, but Mr. Dunn’s selections are unusual, except for Tschaikowsky's “Marche Slav.” We are to hear the symphonic suite, “Antar,” by RimskyKorsakoff, and “Dance of the Buffoons” from “The Snow Maiden” by the same composer. Edwina Eustis, contralto, is to sing “Pauline’s Aria” from Tschaikowsky’s “Piqua Dame,” and Viola Philo has chosen Rachmaninoff’s song, “Cease Thy Singing, Maiden Fair.”
