VACATION TIME HITS RADIO PROGRAMS

Summer Lull Already Noticed; Music Guild Speaker to Review Compositions of Cesar Franck

Sponsors Unconvinced by Networks’ Efforts to Prevent Slump. BY RALPH NORMAN TLA'AJOR networks are using every conceivable method to prevent a summer slump in quality and quantity of programs, but with little more than customary success. Despite compilations of figures to prove that most American families spend evenings and week-end at home in summer as in wuntcr, and that most of those who travel do

it in r adi ocquipped automobiles, most of the better-known entertainers, especially comedians, will take long vacations. i Already Eddie Cantor is off the air until fall, and the curtain will drop on Fred Allen’s show June 1 24, all h o ugh

Stoopnagle and Budd will carry on for the same sponsor. The Phil Baker show will fade June 21, with Frank Crumit and Julia Sanderson pinch-hitting for the Great American Tourist during the hot months. Jack Benny is en route this week to Hollywood, but will air his comedy sketches from the coast until June 21, when anew act will be substituted during July, August and September. We hear that Don Bestor’s orchestra will be with him when he returns to the network in September. Kate Smith is to take her first vacation is five years when she cruises during July and August to Alaska aboard a chartered yacht. Despite radio men’s arguments, sponsors are reported unconvinced that their dollars are well spent during summer months when listeners are supposed to be scarce. a a a AFTER Guy Lombardo opens a summer engagement in Chicago Saturday, his programs are to be heard on both CBS and the Mutual network. CBS will air the Monday evening commercial broadcasts, and Mutual will broadcast the popular director’s late dance music. a a a From the Packard Show Rooms at 8 tonight will be aired another of WIRE’S To You programs, including, in addition to guest performers, Barney and His Peputantes, with Harry Bason at the piano. Buddy Rogers was master-of-ceremonics last week, to introduce several prominent race drivers. nan Tj'Oß serious listeners, and particularly for women, may we BUggest a CBS (WFBM) symposium at 7:30 tonight called “What Price Suffrage?’’ Headed by Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt, who is to discuss “The Vote as a Safeguard of Democracy,” speakers are to include Mrs. Aurelia Reinhardt, president of Mills College, Oakland, Cal.; Mrs. George Gellhorn, of the League of Women Voter*; Gertrude Ely, member national board of League of Women Voters, and Alice Stone Blackwell, daughter of Lucy Stone, editor and founder of “The Woman’s Journal.” ana XT’ ATE SMITH tomorrow morn- -*■*- ing will set her alarm clock at an early hour to be up and cheerful for WIRE’S Morning Matinee at 7. Eddy Duchin’s orchestra will provide the musical background for Kate's breakfast serenade. To Mutual's precedent-breaking early program has come radio's best talent. The permanent commentator, Nellie Revel, is a well-known newspaper woman and special writer. a a a BABE STAPP of Los Angeles, 1935 AAA Middlewest racing champion, and Russell O. Berg, The Timea staff cartoonist, are to appear with Sergt. Edward F. Moore and Martin M. Clinton on WIRE’S Traffic Safety Forum at 1 tomorrow afternoon. This week's discussion topic will be “Is Speed a Menace?” Just 30 minutes after an imaginary accident hed been dramatized on the program last week, a small girl was struck by an automobile under conditions similar to those described by forum speakers. NBC Blue Chain to Carry Tumorrow’s Feature at 12:30. BY JAMES THRASHER Cesar Franck, great figure of nineteenth century French music, is to be the subject of Dr. Daniel Gregory Masoni's talk on “Musicians as Men” during the NBC Music Guild program at 12:30 tomorrow on the Blue network. It was several years after Franck’s death in 1890 before the fantastic and fanatical opinions of his music, pro and con, had quieted down and a sanfe estimate of his contribution was possible. The ardent “Franckists” proclaimed his aloof mysticism, the celestial perfection of his music, while his detractors, including most of the American critics, were equally vehement. Philip Hale, the late critic of the Boston Herald and author of the Boston Symphony program notes, gives the following description of that city’s reaction: “When Ysaye and Lachaume introduced Franck’s violin sonata In 1895; when these and others introduced the magnificent quintet in 1898, leading musicians of this city shook their wise heads and said with an air of finality, ‘This will never do.’ Music Only Tolerated “The string quartet was only tolerated, endured because it was produced at a Kneisel concert, and at that time the Kncisels could do no wrong. . . . when Mr. Gericke produced the symphony in 1899, the storm broke loose. There were letters of angry protest. A leading critic characterized the symphony as ‘dismal.’ Several subscribers to the concerts called it ‘immoral,’ and vowed they would not attend any concert at which music by Franck was to be played.” Today the thought of the Franck symphony as “immoral” is amusing. Nor, it seems, are those who consider his music as utterly removed from earthly things entirely on the right track. Asa man, however, Franck undoubtedly was deeply religious, kind, serene and absorbed in the business of making music. The violin sonata, considered by many as Franck’s masterpiece, is to be performed by William Kroll and Katherine Bacon in connection with Dr. Mason’s discussion.
