OTHMAN United Press Staff Correspondent THE PRESIDENT’S CAMP ON THE RAPTDAN, Va„ May 22—This in the fisherman’s paradise of all America—but there isn’t a trout fly on the whole reservation. There is nobody to appreciate it; only the fowls that roost in rustic chimneys, the woodpeckers that have gone to work on Herbert Hoover's “diplomatic” log, a id the speckled trout that have grcwn fat and lazy with no president il hook and line to irritate them. The camp oozes hospitality and charm, but President Roosevelt wi!i have none of it. He took, one look a couple of years back and never returned, tc the everlasting disappointment of the Marine Corps which guards It, the CCC which rakes the leaves, and the Interior Department which paints the porches and patches the roofs. The*gentlemen in these organizations have been going about their .asks with a deep feeling of frus-tration-wondering what's the use of maintaining the nation's most beautiful rural retreat for a President who rever uses it. They’ve done a plu-perfect job of tending the rippling rills, the leafy bowers and Mrs. Hoover’s flowers. What makes it all the worse is the faet .hat the rules prevent almost everybody from admiring their handiwork. Sits on Famous Log A special permit, which a lot of unwinding of official red tape in Washington produced, was needed to get in. The seven Marines who have camped on the mountainside for seven years, the birds and the beasts w T ere so lonesome they stopped everything to welcome me. Even two rainbow trout came up from their deep pool in the Rapidan River to have a look and only jfiwam away after deciding I was no Ssresirient. The marines were mighty proud of the place. They escorted me to the log on which Mr. Hoover and Premier Ramsay MacDonald sat and fished while they discussed world affairs, and as a special favor let me sit on the exact spots made famous by the President and the prime minister. I tried the President's scat and then the premier’s. There wasn’t much choice; both felt pretty hard and bumpy. Trout Growing Rheumatic The caretakers of this log shoo away the woodpeckers at regular intervals and are considering the dousing of it with chemicals whose flavor woodpeckers don’t like. Only thus, they say, cSn they preserve the Hooverian log for the edification of coming generations. Biggest worry of the guardians, though, are the trout. It has been so many years since they started disporting themselves in a hookless fish parade that they're getting old. Some are rheumatic; and they’re not taking much interest in life any more. The mentors of the trout are considering a spring tonic for their charges, maybe sassafras tea, on the theory that it would be a tragedy, indeed, should President Roosevelt change his mind and try to tussle with a trout which wouldn’t tussle.
