BUTLER PLANS OPEN HOUSE IN MAYDAY FETE Exercises Are to Be Held Tomorrow; Graduation to Be June 15. Butler University is to celebrate May Day tomorrow with a series of activities starting with open house in Jordan Hall at 10 and ending with sunset services. Several hundred Indiana high school pupils have been invited by James W. Putnam, univcrstiy president.

Guests attending the pageant will be served May Day refreshments at the same hour. Sororities and fraternities have arranged special dinners for the evening. Commencement Program Dr. Albert Parker, president of Hanover College, is to deliver the baccalaureate sermon June 14 for eight-first commencement, Mr. Putham announced today. Dr. Raymond Walters, University of Cincinnati president, is to make the commencement address the following day. Both events are to be held in the Butler fieldhouse. President Putnam is to award degrees to more than 300 seniors and graduate students. Closing Activities Set Preparations for closing the school year have begun. Commencement week activities include an annual banquet of the College of Religion on June 11, the annual Phi Kappa Phi banquet on June 12, alumni day and senior class day, June 13. Parmelee Dovey, senior class president, will be in general charge of affairs affecting the graduating group. Betty Humphreys has been named senior class day chairman and I Harry McClelland Jr. is in charge of the senior ball. John L. 11. Fuller, alumm president, is making plans: for the alumni event on June 13. WPA TO PROVIDE IVIEN FOR S. STATE-AV WORK Street to Be Improved lo Road 3, Civic Group Says. WPA labor is to be used to improve S. State-av to U. S. highway 31, Mrs. K. E. Bourff, president of the South State Avenue Civic League, has announced. The league has sought the improvement for several months. The plan has been approved by Dr. Carleton B. McCulloch, director of the county WPA organization, Mrs. Bourff said. He has promised workers as soon as levee construction along White River is completed, she reported. The city has promised assistance on the improvement from Bean Creek to Troy-a.v. Civic leaders of the S. State-av area met with Dr. McCulloch and county commissioners yesterday to explain their plan to make the street an important traffic artery into the city from the southeast.

M'NUTT INVITED TO MAKE SPEECH AT GETTYSBURG Harmony Move Between Legion and Sons of Vets Cited. Times Rpeeial WASHINGTON, May 22.—Gov. McNutt is the choice for a Gettysburg address on Memorial Day this year, Commander Edward L. Weikirt Jr., of the Sons of Veterans, Gettysburg, Pa., explained here today. The invitation for Gov. McNutt tfi appear at the famous battleground cemetery marks one of the first signs of rapport between the Legion and Sons of Veterans, he said. The latter is restricted to sons of members of the Grand Army of the Republic and they are under instructions to keep Memorial Day at the Civil War shrine sacred to the memory of the G. A. R., according to the commander. Gov. McNutt’s appearance will be the first evidence of Legion participation in the rites. The Governor formery was national commander of the Legion. Commander Weikirt, who is doorkeeper of the House of Representatives, is a Hoosier by marriage. His wife is the former Elizabeth Ann Golding, daughter of Charles W. Goding, 2802 Paris-av, Indianapolis. He formerly was a student at Valparaiso University. In arranging to greet the Hoosier
chief executive, Commander Weikert has been assured of a military escort from Harrisburg, Pa. President Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg address at the cemetery on May 30. 1846, and notables have appeared there every anniversary since 1868, the Commander pointed out. Park Board officials today warned agianst playground accidents as two youths recuperated at their homes from injuries received at park playgrounds. t Clarence Wolf, 12, of 1816 W. Washington-st, received a broken left arm when he fell out of a swing at Indianola Park, 1800 W. Wash-ington-st. Roberts Robbins, 19, of 1640 Ar-row-av, sprained his left wrist while playing tennis at Riverside. Both were treated at City Hospital and j taken to their homes.
