RURAL UTILITY LOANS IN STATE TO FACE DELAY New Units Must Wait on Extra Appropriation by Congress. M. J. Briggs, director of Indiana state-wide Rural Electric Membership Corp., today stated that 30 counties now have sufficient membership to receive project loans. Further loans can not be granted new units, however, until the $420,000,000 Norris-Rayburn bill nowpending in Congress is passed, Mr Briggs said. The rural electrification bill now is awaiting action by the Senate. Out of the original appropriation of $10,000,000 Indiana received one and one-half million, according to Mr. Briggs. Whitley and Sheiby Counties Thursday were awarded $196,500 in grants. Mr. Briggs stated that at least $12,000,000 w-ould be necessary to finance the proposed projects in the 30 counties. Six county power unit projects were approved Saturday by the Public Service Commission. Counties must have a membership of at least three applicants to a square mile, and the average membership a county is approximately 1200, he said. Indiana’s REMC, with applications to serve 25,000 homes, leads all other states in membership.
