OBSERVANCE OF FOREI6N TRADE WEEK OUTLINED Chamber of Commerce to Sponsor Activities in Indianapolis. Indianapolis is to take part in the nation-wide observance of National Foreign Trade Week, Monday through Saturday, Myron R. Green, Industrial commissioner of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, announced today. The national program is sponsored by the United States Chamber of Commerce, the Federal Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce and the National Foreign Trade Council. The local observance, sponsored by the Indianapolis Chamber, is to include radio addresses, displays in department stores and banks and the showing of a film on international commerce. Chief Markets Listed Mr. Green said that the chief export market for Indianapolis industries is South America, with some exports being sent to Canada and the British Isles. Indianapolis has obtained little business from Europe, although at one time Italy bought motors in Indianapolis, Mr. Green said. Eli Lilly & Cos. does a world-wide business, and Marmon-Herrington Cos, has filled orders for South America and North Africa. Other local firms doing an export business include Fairbank-Morse, Real Silk Hosiery Mills, E. C. Atkins & Cos., J. D. Adams Manufacturing Cos., Atlas Corp. and Kingan & Cos. $23,500,000 Worth Exported “Although Indianapolis is an inland city, and is not generally regarded as an exporting center of importance, it normally sells abroad about 7 or 8 per cent of its total manufacturing production,” Mr. Green said. “Figures compiled here in 1930 show that during the preceding year, manufacturers in this locality exported approximately $23,500,000 worth of merchandise. There were, at that time, 132 firms participating in this trade which consisted principally in food products, autos, parts and accessories, industrial machinery, hardware, chemical products, hosiery and electrical equipment. “This trade slumped considerably during the depression, but has been on the upgrade for three years, and many local firms report a steadily Increasing volume of foreign business." Displays Are Arranged Exhibits are to be displayed at L. S. Ayres & Cos., Wm. H. Block flapper Fanny Says: weo. U. S. PAT. OPT.
