BROOKLYN CLUB STRIVES TO WORK UP PLAYER TRADE
Dodger Boss Wailing From League Cellar Casey Ready to Give Hurler for Slugger After Cards Run Wild. By United Press NEW YORK, May 15.—That walling noise from the National League cellar today was Manager Casey Stengel moanin’ low over not having a single slugger on his entire Brooklyn Dodger team. Out of 104 home-runs smashed out in the circuit to date, Stengel's crew has accounted but for two of them. It has been nearly three weeks since Linus Frey connected for one and a month since Oscar Eckhardt hit for the circuit against the New York Giants. In fact Casey is so tired of being shut out and losing games by 1-0 and 2-1 scores that he Is ready to pawn one of his best pitchers for a slugger. That is, any of his pitchers except Van Llngle Mungo, who he would not “part with for any slugging outfielder In the league." Stengel in addition to attempting a big league trade has his scouts out looking high and low for a good hitting outfielder who can help bring Brooklyn’s batting average above the .250 mark, the lowest in the league. Only two players are above the .300— Ben Geraghty with .333 and Johny Hasset with .343. Both are first year men.
Snowed Under by Cards The Dodgers took a terrific shellacking from the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday, 12 to 4. The Cards shelled four pitchers for 16 basehits, including homers by “Stew” Martin and Joe Medwick. Bill Walker pitched steady ball for the Red Birds, keeping nine hits fairly scattered. The second place Giants kept up with the leaders as Carl Hubbell shut out the champion Chicago Cubs, 5 to 0. Hubbell dished out only five hits and struck out five men as the Chicagos suffered their fifth straight loss. Lon Warneke was the lasing huner. Pittsburgh’s Pirates gained an even break in their series with the Boston Bees by winning out, 5 to 2. It was Ray Benge’s first defeat of the season. The Pirates counted all their runs in a big eighth-inning rally. Bush, who relieved Tising, was the winner. Philadelphia at Cincinnati was postponed because of cold weather. In the American League the leading New York Yankees made it two out nf three over the St. Louis Browns with a 6-to-l decision as Ruffing held the Brownies to four hits. Joe Di Maggio, rookie outfielder, led the Yanks’ 15-hit attack with three doubles and a single in five attempts. Grove Rings Up No. 6 Lesly Grove registered his sixth victory in seven starts as the Boston Red Sox won out, 3 to 1, over the Detroit Tigers. He held the Bengals to five hits as the Sox took the scries, two games out of three. The Chicago White Sox moved into fourth place ahead of the Tigers by beating out the Washington Senators, 13 to 12, in a rousing slugging match. Lewis’ homer for Washington knotted the count in the ninth at 12-all, but Fred Marberry lost the game for himself when he fielded a bunt and tossed (o third when nobody was there. Haas rounded third and came home with the winning Sox run. Three-hit pitching by Dusty Rhode? gave the Philadelphia Athlectics a 4-to-0 shutout over the Cleveland Indains. Johnson homered for the As. Yesterday's Hero: Joe Di Maggio New York Yankee outfielder, whose three doubles and a single led the Yanks to victory over the Browns. BURNS STOPS KENNEDY By United Press SPOKANE, Wash., May 15. Charlie Burns, 137, Spokane, scored a technical kayo over Truman Kennedy. 138, Bellingham. Wash., in the fourth round last night.

Two Bouts Share Spotlight on Mitt Bill Here Tonight Harry Brown Tangles With Lafayette Ace.
With the signing of Bob Blue and Bill Thexton, local welterweights, for a three-round bout, Matchmaker Roy Wallace has announced the complete card for his amateur boxing show tonight at the Armory. A five-round scrap featuring two heavyweight title holders shares the spotlight with a three-rounder which marks the return of Harry Brown to the local ring. Brown, popular local Golden Gloves welterweight champion, is slated to tangle with Bob Wallace, ace member of an invading Lafayette team. The heavyweight fracas pits Elza Thompson, Golden Gloves crownwearer here, against Bob Longfellow, Kokomo, who rules the division in the state A. A. U. Other Lafayette scrappers carded are Bill Wilson, who tackles Johnny Krukemeier, South Side Turners lightweight; Ray Brown, Golden Gloves flyweight ace, who oposes Rural Tyler, local Negro; Carl Hamilton, meeting Jimmy Houston, Fort Harrison lightweight, and Bob Malvey, featherweight, who faces Joe Faccone of Indianapolis. Don Buckalew, Fort Harrison, and George Hoyt, Indianapolis, are carded for a middleweight go. All bouts except the main event are scheduled for three rounds. Starting time is 8:30.
