Then he said quite casually: Shot Not Fatal “Did you kill him?” he was asked. “No,” he replied, "I just hit him in the leg.” “When was this?” ' “Oh, it was a long time ago, In 1929. SPEEDWAYHELD LESS PERILOUS THANHIGHWAYS Safety Group Impressed, to Distribute Copies of Pop Myers’ Talk. Officers of the Citizens Safety Committee today were making preparations for the printing and public distribution of a speech delivered yesterday before that organization by T. E. (Pop) Myers, general manager of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The committee acted on a motion made by Wallace O. Lee. Chief Morrissey requested that copies of the talk be turned over to him for distribution among school children. Mr. Myers declared racing on the Speedway was safer than driving in everyday traffic. He said that every race driver was required to pass mental and physical tests, and required to obey driving regulations. He also pointed out that both the cars and track are inspected. Track as Laboratory “Fewer accidents per mile occur on race tracks of the nation than on our streets and highways,” Mr. Myers said. “Hundreds of automobile manuBIG REDUCTIONS ON BRAND NEW Philcs Auto Radios KEMPLER RADIO CO. 36 VA. facturers have spent millions of dollars at the Speedway as well as in their laboratories in the development of safety appliances and apparatus. Twist-proof frames, hydraulic brakes and non-shattering glass are ail products which owe much of their development to our racing plant,” he said. Mr. Myers asserted there was too much “hit and miss” in traffic systems. He declared that a large percentage of the accidents could be avoided through proper education of the driving public. “We don’t want drivers who operate their cars in frenzipd fear either, because the slow drivers also constitute a menace on the highways,” he said. Judgment on Distance The Speedway officials quoted statistics showing that it required 73 feet in which to stop a car traveling 30 miles an hour as compared to 295 feet to stop a car going 70. Mr. Myers said drivers always should keep in mind the distance necessary in which to stop. Mr. Myers revealed that the Impact of a car traveling 60 miles an hour is equivalent to an impact
