RADIO PERFORMERS MAKE 'COMEBACK'

Nick Lucas, Once Featured as Crooner, Reappears on Chain as Dance Orchestra Director Singing With Old Vaudeville and Broadcast Favorite Is Benny Fields, Another Victim of Ups and Downs; Don Bestor Is Back, Too. BY RALPH NORMAN Although still in Its infancy in point of years compared with older entertainment, such as the stage and movies, radio has its “comebacks” of persons formerly prominent in broadcasting who today almost are unknown. We are thinking particularly of Nick Lucas, who now has a CBS spot during late-at-night dance broadcasts, and whose orchestra plays nightly at New York’s famous Hollywood restaurant.

It hasn’t been many years since Nick Lucas was known to vaudeville fans and radio listeners as a crooner. He was a featured singer for several eastern stations

before the days of nation-wide hookups, but when no sponsors could be interested (sponsors were scarce in t hose days), he dropped out of radio. Now he is back, not as a singer, but as a band director, on a national network. Binging with him is Benny Fields, who also had to

make a comeback to get a spot on the networks. He now is the singing star of the CBS Follies of the Air, broadcast each Saturday night, and sings with the Lucas band as well. A conductor prominent in broadcasting circles winter before last and now back on the networks after a season's absence is Don Bestor, whose orchestra is to be featured on Mutual’s Morning Matinee at 7 tomorrow (WIRE). Absent from commercial programs after a highly successful season with Jack Benny, Mr. Bestor now is back in New York after a winter of exile in Montreal caused by union difficulties, and is preparing to re-establish his reputation as one of radio’s ace conductors. His recent guest appearance with Comedian Benny brought many rumors that the familiar “Play, Don” again will be heard in Benny shows, with the Bestor orchestra joining the troupe next fall in California. So far, Mr. Benny’s sponsors have been silent concerning next season. u tt •KTFARLY every movie star, -L\ even Bin Tin Tin Jr., has a "stand-in” to substitute during rehearsals, but Gracie Allen is the only radio personality to claim one. When George Burns rehearses for the CBS Wednesday night comedy shows, WFBM at 6:30 tonight, it’s not with Gracie, but with Mary Kelly, who for five years has read Grade’s lines to George and the microphone. While Gracie romps at home with her two children, rehearsals go on, and if Miss Kelly, who imitates all of Grade’s mannerisms, can get laughs from George, the lines stay. If she can’t, new script is prepared. Not until final rehearsal, or sometimes not until the broadcast itself, does Gracie see the script she is to read. The only thing George can’t make Gracie understand is how Miss Kelly can sit during rehearsals when she’s a “stand-in.” tt u A reporter called the WFBM transmitting station to check a report that an employe had been stricken by the heat. He was re - buffed with the reply: “No, that would be impossible.. FRED JUDKINS FUNERAL SET FORIFRIDAY Retired Policeman Dies in Home After Brief Illness; He Was 61. Funeral services for Fred O. Judkins, a retired city policeman, are to be at 3 Friday in the Harry W. Moore Funeral Home. The Rev. Mina Simpson, Church of Truth pastor, is to officiate. Burial is to be in Anderson. Mr. Judkins, who was 61, died yesterday in his home, 929 Fultonst, after a brief illness. He was a lifelong resident of this city. Mr. Judkins served in the police department 25 years and was assigned to guard duty over the World War Chest on the Monument steps in 1918. For years he had operated a patrol wagon. Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Suzanna M. Judkins, and a son, Theodore Judkins, both of Indianapolis; a daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Bradford, of Cleveland, 0., and three sisters, Miss Clara Judkins and Mrs. Mary Mountjoy, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Sarah Huber, of Brooklyn, N.
