SLEUTHS DENT INVESTIGATING CONGRESSMEN Three Agencies Refute Claims Such Probes Have Been Made. By Rcrlppt-Howard i'ewtpaper Alliancf WASHINGTON, R T ay B.—Three leading investigative agencies in the government today denied they had conducted any under-cover inquiries into the affairs of members of Congress. Senator Homer T. Bone (D., Wash.), who has announced that he planned to propose a Senate investigatior. of such investigators, said his statement had brought him many messages and letters suggesting material for such an inquiry. Mr. Bone declined to give any examples of under-cover operations against Senators or congressmen, beyond his statement that one Senator’s campaign expenses were investigated by agents of an unnamed government department, and that agents of another department spent thousands of dollars investigating rumors started by “people of evil reputation who were hired by or in alliance with business competitors of the man under investigation.” Denial Made for G-Men Denials were given to reporters by spokesmen for J. Edgar Hoover’s Bureau of Investigation in the Justice Department, Louis Glavis’ investigating bureau in the Interior Department and the WPA inquiry unit headed by Dallas Dort. “Make the denial as strong as you please, 1 ' was the Justice Department’s reaction to the Bone charges. The developments recalled complaints made by congressmen in the Theodore Roosevelt Administration that they were being shadowed by secret service men, and the unsuccessful prosecution of Senator Burton K. Wheeler (D., Mont.) 10 years ago by the Justice Department, following his investigation of the department’s operations under Harry M. Daugherty. Proposal Before Senate The proposed La Follette investigation of labor espionage and other violations of civil rights, if voted by the Senate, probably would authorize inquiry into any shadowing or investigation of congressmen for political purposes. The preliminary inquiry under the La Follette resolution, justs completed, dealt mostly with anti-labor spies, however. Senator Bone expressed a fear that such investigations as he described, if not curbed, would be used to coerce members “into attitudes favorable to the ends sought by the people who control these under-cover operations.”
COMMODITY PRICES IN GENERAL DECLINE Lowest Average Since Early July Shown by Index. By United Press WASHINGTON. May 8. —The weekly wholesale commodity price Index compiled by the National Fertilizer Association last week fell to the lowest point reached since the first week of last July. The index for the week ended May 2 was 76.1 per cent of the 1926-1928 average, compared with 76.7 in the preceding week, 76.7 a month ago and 77.4 a year ago. There was a general decline in commodity prices during the week, resulting in five of the principal sub-group indexes moving downward. The most important decline took place in the farm products group with 11 of the commodities included in the group declining in price and only four advancing. Price declines were particularly sharp in grains, but cotton and livestock also moved downward. The decline in the index of food prices took it to the lowest level reached since January. 1935.
