A. F. OF L. BALKS UNION PLANS OF RADIO WORKERS Council to Refuse Charter on Industrial Basis, Green Says. BY HERBERT LITTLE Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, May 8. The cralt-union majority of the A. F. of L. executive council has struck again to stop formation of an industrial union in the radio industry. President William Green’s announcement that the executive council will refuse a national union charter for radio is taken to mean that the radio workers must either join the Electrical Workers’ Brotherhood, a craft union, or go ahead as industry union outside the A. F.'of L. The decision brings to a crisis one of the most interesting labor developments of the New Deal period, 25,000 in Federal Unions In the early days of Section 7A, radio workers joined local A. F. of L. “federal” unions in large numbers. About 25.000, it is estimated, are now in such unions, most of them co-operating with the start of an international union headed by aggressive James B. Carey of Philadelphia. Mr. Carey, not yet 30, made a dramatic plea to the A. F. of L. for recognition as an international union. He told of occasions when the machinists and other craft unions blocked the majority of organized workers in efforts to obtain better wages and working conditions, because of unwillingness to co-operate. Another major factor is that the new “federal union” members are required to pay 35 cents a month to the A. F. of L. in Washington. Members of international unions pay only 1 cent a month, the rest of their dues going for local administration and expenses. The big Philco union of about 8000 workers in Philadelphia alone paid more to the A. F. of L. central organization than some of the largest international unions with 20 or 30 times as many members. New York Case Cited Mr. Green pointed out that of the six or seven federal radio unions whose charters have been suspended for insisting on an international union of their own, one in New York City has acceded to the executive council and affiliated with the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. There are more than 40 such local unions in all, which have been co-operating with Mr. Carey m au effort to set up the “National Radio and Allied Trades” union The group several months ago held a convention in Buffalo, in which it was decided to proceed on industrial lines and make another attempt to obtain a charter —which the A. F. of L. council now has rejected. REAL ESTATE WEEK SET FOR MAY 24-30 Realtors Advance Plans for Local ' Observance. Indianapolis realtors today pushed plans for the observance of Real Estate Week, May 24 to 80. M. L. Hall, Real Estate Board president, at a luncheon yesterday said the observance is to be held in conjunction with the second annual regional convention of the National Association of Real Estate Boards here May 28 and 29. Yesterday’s meeting closed with a showing of color motion pictures taken of the garden and floral displays at the Indianapolis Home Show. WRECK-PROOF ROADS NEEDED^ ADAMS SAYS Urges That All Gasoline Funds Be Used for Highways. "The only way to stop accidents is to build highways that will make accidents impossible," James D. Adams, State Highway Commission chairman, told the Indiana Highway Users Association last night at the Claypool. Mr. Adams urged that the $2,000,000 now being diverted annually from gasoline tax revenue into the state general fund be spent to make Indiana highways adequate for present and future needs. Narrow bridges and culverts account for approximately 20 per cent of today’s highway accidents, Mr. Adams said, and contrary to general opinion, trucks play a comparatively minor part in the state accident toll.
