Italy’s Victorious Army Arrives at Addis Ababa
Bandits Flee as Troops Take Positions: U. S. Legation Abandoned. (Continued From Page One) Italians was accompanied by 15.000 African A.skaris who had been encamped on the heights dominating Addis Ababa for the last 48 hours. The Italians took up their positions in the center of town and the natives, including bandits and looters, stampeded out of the city. Some tried unsuccessfully to take refuge In the legation compounds, which they have been attacking. Barton flashed word earlier today that the American legation had been evacuated, and its besieged garrison removed to the safety of the fortified British legation compound. A detachment of his tough Sikh troops were defending the Belgian legation after repelling two fierce attacks on it, he reported. “United States legation safely evacuated this morning,” Barton radioed the foreign office. From the seven words of his message, the foreign office read that Cornelius Van H. Engert, American minister, his wife, his crew of four Navy wireless men, his little staff, and a handful of refugees had left the legation with flying colors, the legation documents and valuables safe. For four days they had stood siege by Jrunken, enraged warriors in the city’s most dangerous quarter, hoping until the last that the longdelayed Italian column would arrive. The American legation was evacuated only when Engert felt it absolutely necessary. He sent women and children, except his wife, to the British legation Sunday night, but remained with the men. An unconfirmed report said the Japanese legation also had been attacked. Bingham Calls Washington To the last Mr. Engert resisted the almost flat orders of Secretary Cordell Hull to abandon the United States legation, pleading that he could hold out. But today, the fifth day on which the Italian entry had been expected, it was indicated that Engert believed he was no longer justified in risking the lives of those with him. He had a few ill-assorted weapons and a small supply ol ammunition to withstand the attacks of bandits. Almost at the same Mme that the Foreign Office received Barton's dispatch, Paul Bodard, French Minister at Addis Ababa, advised the Quai D’Orsay that Ras Hailu, Governor of Gojjam Province, arrived in Addis Ababa last night and gave battle to the bandits still roaming the streets. He had only 150 men, Bodard reported, but they were well disciplined and, fighting the bandits in organized manner, arrested hundreds of them and relieved pressure on the legations. DIPLOMAT SEES 11. “Let’s Explore Your Mind” H Albert Edward Wiggam, D. Sc., distinguished scientist, extends this invitation to you. And Mr. Wiggam may start the game with this: “Since a daughter often resembles her father can you explain why she doesn't inherit his big feet?" Well, now, that is a question, isn’t it? But maybe you may not be sure of the answer and while you are thinking about it suppose Dr. Wiggam asks this: “Is it safer for the heredity of the children for a girl to marry the good son from a bad family than it is to marry the bad son from a good family?” My, oh my! Not so easy is it? * LBERT EDWARD WIGGAM But imagine what interesting Conversation —animated, lively—will sparkle when you discuss questions like these.
