CITY’S 5-YEAR FIRE LOSS SET AT $2303,623 Annual Damage Ranges From $382,343 to $525,569, Report Shows. Gross fire loss for Indianapolis for the last five years is $2,203,623, the report on Indianapolis released today by the National Board of Fire i Underwriters shows. The annual loss ranged from $382,343 in 1933 to $525,569 in 1931. The number of fires per year varied from 613 in 1935 to 1142 in j 1932. The number of fires per 1000 population, based on an average population of 365.000 was 2.63, a low average, the report says; the averi age loss per fire was $459, an average figure, and the average annual loss per capita was $1.20, a very low i figure. j The report stresses the following i recommendations: Makes Recommendations ; All four-inch mains used for hydrant supply should be replaced j within five years, dead ends eliminated wherever practicable, largo mains cross-connected to distribuI tors at frequent intervals, and long ! lines of pipe cross-connected so that eventually not more than one hydrant will be on a six-inch main between intersecting lines and not more than two hydrants on an eight-inch main between intersecting lines. Civil service regulations should bo adopted to provide tenure of offico protection for all members of tho fire department, with removal only after trial on charges, and with suitable provisions for appointment and promotion. Modern, manual fire alarm headquarters equipment should be provided, with adequate capacity to provide proper fire alarm service for the entire city. More Boxes Advised Additional fire alarm boxes should be installed so that a box shall be visible from and within 500 feet of every building in mercani tile and manufacturing sections, and elsewhere within 800 feet of i every valuable group of buildings. Fire alarm circuits should be placed underground in duct systems as far as. practicable, using rub-ber-insulated copper wire in lead | sheathing. Owners of existing defectively I constructed buildings, which are so located as to form conflagration areas, should be required to protect suitably floor, party wall and exposed window openings. Automatic sprinklers, with outside Siamese hose connections and the controlling valve near the main in the street should be required in all buildings which, by reason of their size, construction or occupancy, might act as conflagration breeders.
