RADIO SHOWS -KEEP JOAN BLAINE BUSY
Talented Microphonist, Heard on National, Columbia Chain Each Week, Has Lead in 'Mary Marlin' Appears in ‘Tale of Today’ at 7:30 Mondays on NBC; She Is Graduate Lawyer, and Held 11 Jobs at One Time While Attending Northwestern. BY RALPH NORMAN BEGINNING her second year on the CBS alrlanes, versatile and talented Joan Blaine plays the leading role in the "Mary Marlin” drama broadcast, CBS <WFBM> at 10:30 each morning, Monday through Friday. The busy star also is to be heard tonight and every Monday night on NBC-WJZ at 7:30 in another radio story, “Tale of Today." How long Miss Blaine will play radio drama no one knows. But all who work with her believe she could be successful at almost any-
thing. In fact, she already has been successful at almost everything. She is a graduate lawyer,
once served as legal adviser to a Western mining firm. While a student at Northwestern University she had 11 different jobs at one time; she’s a nurse, singer, teacher, pianist, librarian, dress designer and authoress. She planned a career as a concert pianist,

but gave It up for the concert stage when persuaded her voice merited training. Just now Miss Blaine is one of Columbia's leading actresses. The one thing that she really wants to do, and about the only thing she hasn’t done, Is to retire to a Connecticut farm and write. So far her authorship has been limited to a few short stories and poems. But for the time being Miss Blaine may be heard six times each week on two networks —an undertaking even more seas
Music i BY JAMES THRASHER lITITH the departure of Maestro Toscanini from the New York ▼ ▼Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra, interest turns to those conductors who are to assume the difficult task of filling his place. Radio listeners already have made the acquaintance of Artur Rodzinski, to whom the last eight weeks of next season have been entrusted, through his broadcasts with the Cleveland Orchestra this year. Now we are to be given a trans-Atlantic introduction to John Barbirolli, the young and comparatively unknown Britisher who has been chosen to conduct the first 10 weeks of the next Philharmonic Symphony season. By special arrangement with the British Broadcasting Corp, NBC is to present Mr. Barbirolli in a half hour program with the BBC orchestra at 3:30 tomorrow, through the WEAF’ network and WIRE.
Born in London 36 years ago, of an Italian father and French mother, Mr. Barbirolli has appeared as guest conductor with all the leading English orchestras as well as in Finland and Russia. At present he is conductor of the Scottish and Leeds orchestras. Mr. Barbirolli says he is “blessed with a catholic taste in all music, enabling me to conduct Rossini's 'Barber of Seville’ with as much delight as Wagner's ‘Goetterdaemmerung’.” He believes, however, that programs should be planned around the works of such old masters as Beethoven, Moaart, Haydn, Berlioz and others. m * * AN aria from the little known tragic musical drama, “Fedora,’' by Giordano, is to be the highlight of Richard Crook's program at 6:30 tonight, with Margaret Speaks, soprano, and William Daly's orchestra through WIRE and the NBC Red network. He also is to be heard with Miss Speaks in the duet, "Parigi O Cara," from Verdi’s “La Traviata,'’ in which the unhappy Alfred and the dying Violetta are reconciled and swear eternal devotion. M * M THE second set of “Liebeslieder" waltzes by Brahms, written for the unusual combi-
ESKIMOS BURN SOLID BLOCKS OF CRUDE OIL Discovery of Lake Solves Fuel Problem In Arctic. By United Preaa POINT BARROW. Ala.ska. April 27.—Discovery of solid crude oil which the Eskimos cut into blocks and use in their stoves is believed to be a solution to the fuel problem in this part of the Arctic Circle. The oil is in* a solid lake on the surface of the ground and burns readily. The old heating system by means of seal and whale oil lamps in Eskimo houses has been replaced in many cases by the use of the solid oil. It is also being used in government schools of the region.

nation of mixed quartet and two pianos, is to be presented at 11:45 tomorrow by the Lieder-* singers with Robert Brain and Milan Smolen, pianists, on the NBC Music Guild program over the WEAF network. Messrs. Braine and Smolen will conclude the broadcast with the “Variations on a Theme of Haydin” by the same composer Brahms’ circle of admirers was widened considerably by the appearance of these two sets of vocal waltzes, as well as the instrumental waltzes and Hungarian dances. A public which had grown to expect works of a rather ponderous nature from Brahms were delighted by these simple and tuneful pieces. The “Liebelieder” were based upon Cossack and Polish folk tunes. • U H r 1 'HE wealth and beauty of A Mozart’s inspired melodic gift is nowhere more apparent than in the suite for string orchestra. “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik,” from which Victor Bay has chosen the ’Serenade’’ for performances by the newly formed Columbia Chamber Orchestra tomorrow. Two Grieg transcriptions and Prank Bridge’s arrangement of the old English songs, “Sally in Our Alley" and “Cherry Ripe." are to complete the program heard at 3:30 through WFBM.
