COUNTY TOMATO GROWERS FORM PRODUCERS' UNIT
Better Crops for Canners Is Goal of New Organization. Marion County tomato growers are organizing a unit of the Indi-*nn-u s. “Won” Tomato Club, Horace E. Abbott, county agricultural agent, said today. The project is sponsored by Purdue University horticultural extension department, county agents, the Indiana Canners’ Association, local canning companies and farmers contracting acreage with canning companies. The purpose of the club is threefold: More Profits Sought 1. To further improve the quality of Indiana canning crop. 2. To make production more profitable to growers. 3. Insure better quality raw products. Membership is composed of farmers selling to sponsoring canners. and who will abide by the rules and regulations prescribed for members. Classes Are Scheduled During the crop period meetings and educational classes are to be held. Bronze, silver and gold medals are to be awarded in the fall by the ' canners’ association to growers meeting requirements, and bonuses ranging from 15 to 50 cents a ton are to be paid for total tons of quality tomatoes delivered. Contract growers for Van Camp's and Stokeley have already joined the club, Mr. Abbott said. * EVANS RE-ELECTED TO HEAD SAFETY COUNCIL Officers of Education Body Chosen at Reorganization Meeting. William A. Evans, director of publications lor the Indianapolis public schools, is to serve another term as chairman of the Indianapolis Safety Education Council. Other officers elected at the annual re-organization meeting of the Council yesterday are Miss Elizabeth Scott School 84 principal, secretary, and Gilbert Echtenkamp, of the Emmaus Lutheran School, treasurer. Mrs. S. M. Myers, safety chairman of the Indianapolis ParentTeacher Association and Council vice president, announced she is to retire from P.-T. A. work soon. The vice presidency was left open until a successor to Mrs. Myers in the P.T. A. is selected. FILING DEADLINE NEAR May 4 Final Date on Real Estate Mortgage Exemptions. Mortgage exemptions on real estate in Marion County can be filed only until May 4, Charles A. Grossart, county auditor, said today. Owners of real estate valued at more than SIOOO may receive a mortgage exemption provided the real estate is listed in the name of the person filing the exemption, he said.

ALLEGED KIDNAPER OF YOUTH FACES HEARING Prisoner to Be Prosecuted Under Pennsylvania Law. ISy United l‘r> s* ALLENTOWN, Pa., April 24. Richard Taylor, 42, Akron, 0., is to be given a hearing today on a charge of kidnaping 10-year-old Henry Thomas Koch, wealthy department store executive’s son. Taylor will be prosecuted under Pennsylvania law governing kidnaping. District Attorney John L. Cutshall said. Police reported Taylor made a “full confession.” The boy told police that he was lured into a car, bound and gagged. He said he freed himself when Taylor left him under a blanket in a woods, apparently to return to Allentown to “collect” a $20,000 ransom.Taylor maintained he committed the crime unaided, police said.
