Music BY JAMES THRASHER DUSOLINA GIANNINI, favorite of Indianapolis audiences as well as new Metropolitan Opera soprano, has recovered from her recent indisposition and is to be heard as guest soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at 7 tonight. “Vissi d’Arte,” from Puccini’s “La Tosca”; “Estrellita,’ by Ponce; “Songs My Mother Taught Me,” by Dvorak, and “Annie Laurie,” will comprise her solos. The orchestra, under Antonio Modarelli, is listed for performances of the famous “Wedding March” from Mendelssohn’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream Music”; Strauss “Blue Danube” waltzes, and the "Bolero” of Maurice Ravel. Doubtless v/e shall have only a “taste” of the last two numbers, since the entire broadcast is confined to a half hour and the "Bolero.” in its uncut version, is approximately 15 minutes long. The program is broadcast on the NBC Blue network (WIRE). an n Efrem Zimbalist, who at the age of nine was first violinist in the Petrograd Opera orchestra, is to appear as one of the guest artists on the’ Bing Crosby program at 9 tonight, through WLW and the NBCWEAF network. His numbers have not been announced.

Crosby’s Music Hall, NBC-WEAF (WLW) (at 9 tonight.... Also at 9, CBS (WFBM), Horace Heidt will air his last preview of his local stage appearance, which is to begin Friday. * M u Babe Ruth was known as a “ball player’s bail player;” that is, he was an athlete greatly admired by his colleagues. Katharine Cornell, legitimate theater actress, often has been requested to give professional matinees to please members of the acting profession who were unable to attend regular performances. To round out the trilogy, Benny Goodman is recognized as a musician's musician. He is leading in two divisions, the best swing band and the favorite band of all, in a contest being conducted by a music magazine. Only professional musicians may cast ballots in the contest. a u The dismal argument that it is only a matter of time until the radio puts an end to all good reading, is nonsense, says the Saturday Review of Literature. “The radio may do a great deal to restore good reading, which suffers more from diffusion than from lack of material. What the radio is actually doing is to give back to the human voice the telling of stories and the narrating of events,” the Review states. “This is wnere story-telling, pure and simple, belongs. It was always a face-to-face or mouth-to-ear affair, until writing and afterward printing Interfered. The best story-telling was. and is, oral. The best tales are told tales, designed for an immediate effect, where the voice readily does what written style accomplishes with such difficulty, and is so sure to be ineffective unless a master hand molds the diction. “In all probability the radio will eventually take over muefr, though by no means all. . . Many Westerns, many boy-and-girl stories, many detective stories, most sermons on economics and politics, most books that comment on current events, most popular science, all simple lyric and narrative poetry, will find a happy home on the radio. “What would be left would be real books. The radio can talk about them, but not give them. They must be written—and read.” n n THOSE assassins of sorrow, Honeyboy and Sassafras, NBCWEAF (WIRE) each morning at 11:15, by way of adding a little suspense-interest to the story cf their mythical station, 7-11 XYZ, related that “a radio expert down in Washington said the station

One message which every one in town had signed, came from Paris, Ontario, and explained that at least five million persons in Canada wanted Honeyboy and Sassafras to stay on the air. We can’t help but wonder if the boys didn’t have something up their sleeve when they made sly mention of leaving the air. u# ' # CBS will lose two important programs to NBC soon. Ed Wynn, dissatisfied with his showing on his new Thursday night series, CBS (WFBM) at 8:30, will move to NBC-WEAF to fill the time now taken by the Fire Chief program. After Tuesday, this broadcast is to leave the air for the summer. It is rumored that Ed is negotiating with his old straight man, Graham McNiamee, to get him to rejoin him. However, Graham’s present contract, unless an adjustment is made, may prevent a reunion. The other CBS program to move to NBC is Lavender and Old Lace, now a Tuesday night offering, which is to open Wednesday on NBC-WJZ.
