DINNER AT SITE OF HOME SHOW STIRS INTEREST Exhibitors Grind Beefsteak With Cement; Are Given Pre-View. Officials of the Indianapolis Home Show, Inc., today were enthusiasts concerning the success of the exposition opening Thursday night at 8:15 in the Manufacturers’ Building of the State Fairground. The enthusiasm was generated at a dinner last night at the show site. A menu composed of beefsteak, cement dust, clanging hammers and a galaxy of short and snappy speeches was served. Those attending were exhibitors, representatives of local garden clubs and exposition board members. Formal opening of the exhibit on Thursday is to follow another dinner at the Indianapolis Athletic Club. R. Earl Peters, state Federal Housing Administration director, is to deliver the principal address at the inaugural ceremonies. Much Work to Be Done Guests attending last night’s dinner were able to get a fairly accurate picture of Just how the show is to appear at the opening. The “Electrohome” forms the centerpiece, and when the carpenters, painters, decorators, cement workers and landscape gardeners complete their tasks it is to be surrounded by a beautiful setting and attractive exhibits. Although much work remains to be done during the next two days, show officials said that exhibitors had been instructed to have their displays in place by noon Thursday, and that if the present schedule of work is maintained all would be completed on time. Miller Hamilton of the Indianapolis Water Cos. told diners that, according to a survey made in March, vacancies in residential properties here exclusive of apartments, are fewer than ever before. He reported a total of 3595 vacancies, but of this number only 455 were classified as modern. Os the 3140 classed as nonmodern, only RO3 could be transformed into modern dwellings, according to the report. Fewer Factories Vacant Mr. Hamilton also presented figures showing that during the 12 months ending March 1, a total of 1354 residential properties were torn down. He reported only 419 vacancies in modern ground floor storerooms, and 48 factory vacancies as compared with 85 in March, 1935. A year ago dwelling vacancies totaled 5463 and in 1934 they were 7679. The meeting was informal, with Ted C. Brown, exposition president, introducing J. Frank Cantwell, director, who presided. Others who spoke were: Walter Evans, former president; Mrs. Eugene D. Foley, vice president, who represented the garden clubs of the city; Robert L. Mason, president of the local Home Builders’ Association; Carl Brandlein, of the Allied Florists’ Association. Andrew N. Miller, of the City Park System; Emmett Ralston, Electric League prp.sident; Robert Foster, of the Chamber of Commerce; E. D. Pierre, past president of the Construction League; Fred Palmer, vice president of the show; Frank Woolling, of the Home Builders’. Association; Walter L. Stace, assistant show director, and Robert Allison, Indiana Real Estate Association president. DR. BENHAM IS NAMED HEAD OF CITY DENTISTS Succeeds Dr. A. C. Harvey, Secretary H. C. Percival Is Re-elected. Dr. R. F. Benham today succeeded Dr. A. C. Harvey as the new president of the Indianapolis Dental Society? Other officers, elected at a dinner in the Hotel Lincoln last night, are Dr. H. C. Percival, secretary, re-elected; Dr. Walter E. Beyer, treasurer, and Dr. H. H. Nagle, member of the ad interim committee for three years. Prosecutor Herbert Spencer .spoke on the enforcement of the Indiana dental law as a protection to the profession and the public.
