A. B. C. SPOTLIGHT TURNS ON CRACK LOCAL PIN QUINTET
Fans on Edge as Cookmen Await Action Pritchett Team to Make Bid Tonight; Champs Also Slated. BY BERNARD HARMON Every yard of space in the State Fairground Coliseum Is expected to be filled at 8:15 tonight, when Jess Pritchett Sr. parades his 1936 edition of star piasters, Cook's Goldblumes, to Alleys 17 and 18 for competition in the American Bowling Cor grass tournament. Pr.tchett, for years the city’s outstanding tenpin spiller and known nationally as one of the best in the game, is enjoying one of his best seasons, and if tradition runs true to form, his quintet should finish well up in the money. For several years the leading squad of the host city to the A. B. C. has enjoyed a scoring spree that carried it well to the top, and fans believe Jess has an aggregation that will make history repeat. All Over 200 Mark Members of the team are Pritchett, John Fehr, Don Johnson, Lee Carmin and Johnny Murphy, and each carries an average over the 200 mark in the city’s two fastest circuits, the Indianapolis and Fountain Square Recreation league. As a team, the average in the former loop is 1021, while in the Fountain Square wheel these stars carry a 1012. During the season they have tossed single game counts of 1225 fma 1209 and series of 3325 and 3224. Every bowling follower in the city will be pulling for the squad to connect with a stellar performance. Sharing the spotlight with the fast city team will be the Wolfe's Firestone Service, five-man champions of the 1935 tournament at Syracuse. These boys are intent on pulling the unexpected, to win two consecutive championships, and they have a lineup of stars that may turn the trick. Bodines to Roll Firing on the same alleys with the Goldblumes, will be the Bodine Hardware Cos. of Bradford, Pa., captained by Eddie Shay, who in 1927 led the team sponsored by Harold Lloyd, movie comedian, to the A. : . C. event in Peoria. Coca Cola Bottlers, the outstanding pin quintet of Dallas, Texas, is slated for action on the 10:15 squad, and at the same time Recreation Cos. of Denver, one of the best in the West, is to try its luck. Coliseum customers are expected to go home knowing they have seen one of the best exhibitions since the big show opened. Team Scoring Unimpressive Sixty-four teams struggled through last night’s schedule and one lone aggregation came through with a total that won it a place among the top 10 in the standings. Carpenter Steel of Reading, Pa., rolling on the opening squad, inserted a brilliant 1019 between a 975 opener and a 858 windup for a 2952 that gained it a tie for ninth place. Dan Wink, with a 626, and Bill Bower, with 608, were the team’s chief scorers. Two other teams reached the 2900 mark, both on the 10:15 squad. After opening with an 858, Williamson Heater Cos. of Cincinnati gained momentum and tossed games of 1025 and 1031 for a 2914 total, which was several pins short of a •’board position.” Purol Pep of Saginaw, Mich., wound up their series three pins behind the Queen City five, using games of 970, 960 and 981 for its 2911. Heil Quality Products failed to get out of the 900 class, and incidentally wound up with a 2897, much to the disappointment of a huge gathering of pin fans. With their star-studded lineup, they were expected to produce some of the fancy shooting that won them the title of world’s match champions. However, Hank Marino was the only member that clicked in champioship style. He totaled 650 through games of 253, 206 and 191. Gil Zunker. who holds a pair of A. B. C. all-time records, passed the .600 mark with three pins to spare but other members were unable to reach the honor mark. Sherman Posts 695 Series The minor events program, run off during the daylight sessions, developed a quartet of scores that were good for places in the top ten of the singles and all events divisions. With a host of stars in action, changes were expected at the top of the standings, but the highest place obtained by the pinmen was sixth in the all-events. Sid Sherman, well-known match bowler from Toledo, cut loose with games of 247, 257 and 191 for a 695 that gained him eighth place in the standings of the individual events. Arthur Ladd, a member of the O'Fallon, Illinois’ lone entry, garnered a 693 from games of 234, 224 and 235, which was good for tenth place. Brokaw Disappoints No doubles team in action during the day was able to collect a total good enough for a spot on ‘ the board.” Les Fuller and George Morrison, Chicago duo combined totals of 587 and 673 for a 1260, the best series of the day. Otto Weimer with a 618 and Lou Wuske with 636 totaled 1254 for the runnerup honors. George Morrison, Chicago pastimer, 1930 all-events champion, added a doubles total of 673 and a singles series of 626 to his 622 iV.eman count for a 1921 that gained him sixth place in the all-events standings. Jack Bishop,* another Windy City kegeler, combined series of 662, 584 and 661 for a 1907. which boosted him to eighth place. Donald Brokaw, defending singles champion, failed to make an impression in his minor events appearance. He connected for a 583 in hit doubles games and showed a mere 493 in defense of his 1935 title.
