FRED ALLEN DEVOTES WEEK TO PROGRAM

Writing Script, Reading Papers for News Flashes, Rehearsing, Leave Star Little Free Time

Lowell Thomas Takes First Vacation in Six Years; Dale Carnegie and Will Durant Replace Veteran Commentator on NBC. BY RALPH NORMAN WE’RE not fooling you when we tell you the man who fools us every Wednesday night with his Town Hall program has to work all week to do it. “What an easy life,” friends tell Fred Allen, who has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do but to prepare one radio program each week. Sounds simple, doesn't it? But let's see what Fred does in preparation for the hour that he comes to us through the loud speaker.

The Allen social life, being simple, makes a good place to start. It consists of a midnight supper with a few friends after the second Wednesday night broadcast. Portland HofTa (Mrs. Allen) told a friend she had no evening dress, then hastened to explain,

lest the friend think that Fred wasn't a good provider, that she had no need for one. Work on the script for tonight’s program started last Thursday when Fred wrote the comedy skit for the Mighty Allen Art Players. He finished it

Friday and the Allens took the evening ofT to see a show, Fred hoping to note something that could be burlesqued. The dialogue with Portland was written Saturday, and Sunday was set aside for the news flashes which open Town Hail Tonight. They sound simple, but the comedian always reads nine New York newspapers for inspiration, and they are complicated by radio rules which prohibit mentioning of names without permission. Nothing controversial may be hinted and no listeners can be offended. First rehearsals were on Monday. Tuesday was spent revising the parts that didn't click. Early this morning the revised script went into rehearsal, and then there was a session with the sponsor to get his approval. Two hours of broadcasting, and a week’s work in history. Programs never can be used again, except in an emergency like Jack Benny’s illness when an old skit was substituted at the last minute. u Tonight at 8, NBC-WEAF (WLW), Fred Is to feature the biggest of all amateur hours, with such unheard-of beginners as Phil Baker, Irene Rich. Colonel Stcopnagle and Budd, Tom and Fred Waring and Peter Van Steedm on his program. Fred has clothed in secrecy his amateurs’ plans, so tune in for this high spot of radio's April foolishness.

Rosa Ponselle is to be the soloist, as she was on a corresponding evening in 1934. organised a unique orchestra to supplement the solo appearances of Lily Pons and Nino Martini. His 45 musicians included veterans of 37 dance bands, 33 symphony orchestras and eight opera houses; in the virtuoso group were 11 composers. 13 former concertmasters and four conductor's. n n n A CHAMBER music recital, short-waved from Lisbon, Portugal, is to be presented at 4:15 tomorrow through the NBCWEAF network. This is the first concert of a group arranged by the National Federation of Music Clubs to promote international understanding through the medium of music. The “Concerto Grosso’’ of Albert Stoessel is to be a program feature, and will be played by a group of Lisbon musicians organized by Robert G. Caldwell, American minister to Portugal. Mr. Stoessel is noted as the conductor of the New York Oratorio Society and of the Chau-

A BRIEF vacation from what probably is the longest continuous broadcast in radio history is being taken this week by Lowell Thomas. For the last six years the commentator has missed only three scheduled programs, despite the fact that for one week he was forced to make his observations from a hospital cot. Substituting for Mr. Thomas are Dale Carnegie through tomorrow night, and Dr. Will Durant, who will talk Friday night. NBCWJZ (WLW) airs these programs at 5:45 each afternoon, Monday through Friday. an a Mr. Million at Radio City turned out to be Mr. and Mrs. Million, an Ardmore (Pa.) couple in New York to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary.
