RUFFING, GREENBERG LEAVE BASEBALL HOLDOUT RANKS
Major Stars Reach Terms With Owners Pitcher Joins Yankees and First-Sacker Reports to Tigers. By United Press ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., March 27.—Charles (Red) Ruffing, big New York Yankees' right-handed pitcher, haft ended his holdout campaign and signed for the same $12,000 salary he received last season. This leaves only Ec*. Chapman, outfielder, outside the fold. Col. Jacob Ruppert, Yankee owner, said today that nothing had been heard yet from “Blazing Ben,” indicating that Chapman would not be signed until the Yanks stop off in Birmingham, Ben’s home town, for a two-game series on April 1. At the same time it was announced at Lakeland, Fla., the Detroit training camp, that Hank Greenberg, slugging first baseman, had signed and was practicing with the Tigers today. Hank Given Boost LAKELAND, Fla., March 27.—Big Hank Greenberg today was ready to Jump into the “seventh game of the world series” between the Tigers and Cubs after ending his long holdout last night by signing a contract. The amount of Greenberg’s new salary was not revealed when his three-hour huddle with Club President Walter O. Briggs and Mickey Cochrane ended. From the smiles that wreathed the big sacker’s face it was indicated that the American League’s most valuable player of last season had been boosted from about SIO,OOO (last year’s salary) to nearly $20,000. MACKS START NORTH JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 27. —Connie Mack's “varsity” squad started its barnstorming jaunt north with a crew of 27, including 12 pitchers. Another 20 hopefuls were left at Fort Myers. Rookie Outfielder Emil Mailho earned a spot with the touring troupe by rapping out five hits in five trips to the plate in yesterday’s 19-0 shutout victory over the Newark Bears. BEES HALT PHILLIES WINTER HAVEN, Fla., March 27. —Manager Jimmy Wilson did not enjoy the 10-inning 3-2 defeat of the Phils by Boston’s Bees yesterday, but he is glad the boys will not be pressing to maintain a winning streak when the season opens. The New York Giants took on the Atlanta Crackers here today for a final tune-up game before resuming hostilities with Cleveland’s Indians at New Orleans tomorrow.

GLOVE DIMENSIONS By United Press BELLEAIR HEIGHTS, Fla., March 27. —Anew rule restricting the size of first basemen’s gloves to dimensions eight inches by 12 was announced today by Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, baseball commissioner. It provides: “The first baseman may wear a leather glove or mitt not more than 12 inches long from top to bottom and not more than eight inches wide across the palm with thumb and palm connected by leather lacing not more than four inches from thumb to end of palm. The lacing shall not be enlarged, extended or reinforced by any process of material whatever.”

Zaharias Is Reinstated; Bout With Shires Likely State Commission Sanctions 'Mixed’ Match at Armory Tuesday; Former Ball Player Starts Training. The way was cleared today for a “mixed match” between Art (Whattaman) Shires, former major league baseball player and ex-pugilist, and George (Cry Baby) Zaharias, husky Colorado grappler, at the Armory Tuesday night. The fighter vs. wrestler encounter is to be offered as an addition to the regular weekly mat card of the Hercules A. C.
Sam Murbarger, chief inspector for the Indiana State Athletic Commission, announced the lifting of a suspension on Zaharias, and Matchmaker Lloyd Carter reported that both Shires and Zaharias have agreed verbally to terms and are expected to sign articles of agreement within the next 24 hours. The commission has sanctioned the “mixed match.” Art was in town today and announced he would remain here for training at a local gym. The encounter is to call for ten scheduled rounds of three minutes each, with Shires wearing six-ounce gloves with the right to hit any place above the belt, Zaharias, who appears just as anxious for the scrap as Shires, must adhere to regular wrestling rules which elimi-
