CRACK EASTERN BOWLERS FACE A. B. C. RUNWAYS TONIGHT
New Yorkers Outstanding on Program Mort Lindsey Heads Radio City Five: Benkovic With Pabst. BY BERNARD HARMON Tonight’s American Bowling Congress program finds several of the nation’s best pin teams carded for action on the State Fairground Coliseum drives. Following the firing in the minor events, scheduled on the daylight sessions, two squads of 32 teams each are to face the maples on the 8 and 10 o’clock shifts. A packed house is expected to greet the initial squad as the teams , step across the runways to their respective battle grounds, for included in the lineup of quintets scheduled are four of the nation’s top flight fives. The feature attraction of the quartet of crack aggregation should be the Radio City quintet of New York City, which includes in its lineup one of the most colorful pinsters the game has ever produced, Mort Lindsey. He has an average of 200 for his last six A. B. C. appearances and twice has been a member of the w-inning five-man team. Men From Manhattan Three additional teams from Manhattan are scheduled along with the Radios. Brunswick Red Crowns, Pabst Blue Ribbon and Tudor City Recreation are among the best quintets in the East and all are capable of turning in scores that may cause a decided change in the standings. The 10 o’clock squad also finds some crack aggregations ready to fire at the elusive maples. Frank Benkovic’s Pabst Blue Ribbons of Chicago, always considered a dangerous tournament team, is to be one of the squad’s 32 teams. Mailers No. 10 and Marmon-Herrington teams, both rated among the best in Indianapolis, are also to try their luck on the evening’s closing shift. The Mailers team is composed of a quintet of young pastimers and is known to be at its best when the going is toughest. The Marmons roll regularly in the Indianapolis League, and have made a creditable showing during the regular season. Oklahoman Goes Big No changes were registered in the standings of the top ten of the doubles and singles standings as two squads fired at the maples on yesterday's daylight shifts. Conn Matheson and Arnold Pearson, Fnid (Okla.) duo, totaled 1221 to outscore all rivals on the 11 o’clock shift, while Bertram Wcltcns, San Antonio (Tex.) pastimer, assembled a 629 to nab honors on the 11:45 singles squad. Nathan Jones, Buffalo, cracked the maples for a 683 in his doubles games, but when his partner, Mort Donavan, halted at 534, the duo’s aggregate score of 1216 failed to land them among the ten leaders. The total, however, was tops for the 12:30 two-man squad. Vance Oathout, a local kegeler, inserted a nifty 277 count between games of 172 and 191 to total 640, the best series of the 1:15 squad of singles contestants. Huge Crowd on Hand Casey Mills of Enid, Okla., climaxed his team total of 637 and his doubles series of 639 with a 598 in the singles. The nine games gave him an 1874 total which was good for a tie for fifth in the allevents standings. The three squads that faced the maples on last night's program were greeted by another huge audience, but the scores turned in by the 92 teams failed to do much damage to the ten leaders. The evening’s opening squad included city and state booster teams. Crown Point Merchants of Crown Point, Ind., totaled 2605 for scoring honors. Higher totals resulted from the efforts of the teams in action on the second squad. Sterling Beer of Champaign, 111., set the pace with a 2860, which was just out of the “big ten’’ standings. The Beers used games of 959, 915 and 986 for "the brilliant series. The thirty quintets making up the final squad were Cincinnati aggregations, that included some of the best pastimers in the Queen City. Nurre Undertakers was the onlyquintet to produce a total tfcat was good for position in the standings of the top ten. Paced by Spratt's 659 the quintet turned in games of 954, 946 and 988 that were good for a 2888 and sixth place.

JOE RATEUNBERO JR.. City Hospital purchasing agent, was in action with the institution's quintet. He was reported to have left hurriedly for his hospital headquarters in search of a supply of liniment after winding up his threegame series. ... Jess Smythe was in his anchor position with the State Highway Kellam Kegelers. but he failed to turn in one of those hefty scores. . . . Carl Hardin's Boosters evidently needed a boost in the form of one of their sponsor's big totals. * K tt THE black-shirted Lieber Lagers and Old Gold Cigarets teams were the "best dressed" of the 8:30 squad. The Lagers also wore gray trousers. . . . Larry Langbein, No. 1 man of the Brandt Bros, five, led the second "procession” of the evening. . . . Kay Jewels of Evansville wore white sweaters and each carried the name of its wearer on the front. You couldn't help but identify that crew. . . . Bill Everhardt. A. B. C. electrician, was in action with the Buffalo Antlers Blues. . . . Bill Otto of the Baker's Grocery team of Harrison, 0., was credited with the initial strike of the middle squad.

JERRY O'GRADY had trouble locating the head pin as he opened his series. He rolled with Lieber Lagers. . . . Phil Bisesi will have a hard time telling his scoreboard pals how he happened to pick that cherry' in his init.’al game, but he can retaliate with that 643 total. . . . The Cincinnati Post Junior Champs received a great ovation as they marched across the runways with the 10:30 squad. The members of the team are all under 21 years of age, and were selected through an elimination series conducted by The Cincinnati Post. More than 100 entrants took part in the contest. u m a TWO teams from Houston, Tex., and one from Galveston arrived yesterday and appeared at the Coliseum topped by 10-gallon hats. . . . Bob Niemoeller of the Old Fort Country Club was the first Cincinnattian on the 10:30 squad to step across the ‘gangplank” leading to the alleys. Members of 30 teams from the Queen City followed him and were accorded a big hand by a host of rooters who accompanied the pin-spilling delegation.

Minnesota t De Paul in Series Tonight By United Prrsi CHICAGO, March 26.—Minnesota and De Paul, survivors of Olympio district basketball tournaments, tonight open their battle to represent the Midwest in the finals at Madison Square Garden. New York. De Paul, which defeated Minnesota earlier in the season, is favored to sweep the series. The second game will be played Friday and a third Saturday, if necessary. Fort Wayne Sees First State Title Historic City Keys for Triumphant March. (Continued From Page Twenty) something but thought 1937 would be the big year.” Every one is confident the Tigers will rush through Central of Evansville at Indianapolis Saturday at 2. There is an old score to avenge in that tilt. Central was slated for The Indianapolis Times football championship trophy last fali. It isn’t in the trophy case here. Memorial of Evansville captured a post-season game to spoil the record. Steve Sitko, the team's highscorer, was all-state quarter back on the team. Robert Brown, Fred Kabisch, Dan Bourne and Jack Paul also were on the gridiron machine. Victory Celebration Planned The man on the street here iR open in boasting that there will be a victory celebration on the courthouse square Saturday night. The deciding factor, it seems, would be an Anderson triumph over Frankfort. Central lost to Anderson early in the season. The Tigers had the Indians down 25 to 13 going into the last quarter and lost, 29 to 27. The fans are certain of beating the Chaddmen the “next time.” Central will be hard to figure out Saturday. Mendenhall is not sure himself. He has 12 good players. Not only does he shift the starting five, but the positions they play. Four men have been used at center. Frequent substitutions are used until a successful combination is found. Only five times this year has the system failed. Five of the players are without previous experience. There is nothing tangible in the makeup of this enigmatic team except it keeps driving all the way and seems to get results.
