BATTLE FOR 1937 A. B. C. TOURNAMENT GAINS MOMENTUM

Rival Cities Gird Forces for Ballots New York and Detroit to Wage Intensive Duel for Pin Site BY BERNARD HARMON Bowling leaders from New York City and Detroit were today lining up their forces in an effort to swing votes to their respective cities u’hen the balloting to decide the site of the 1937 tournament begins at the annual meeting of the Congress in Tomlinson Hall Friday afternoon. The Gotham forces were augmented yesterday by C. N. Nichols, director of the New York City Department of Conventions, and Jim Wilson, past president of the American Bowling Congress. The Empire State delegation has established headquarters at the Lincoln. Mayor Fiorella La Guardia is expected to personally invite the members of the national bowling fraternity to hold their next classic in his city. Advance agents last night believed that the mayor would make the trip here by plane Friday morning. However, in event that official duties prevent his appearance here, Borough President Levy of the big city, is to act as his representative and is expected to introduce the city's leader, who is to goffer the invitation through an amplified long-distance telephone conversation. A special train carrying more Ihan 100 additional New York representatives is scheduled to arrive here Thursday morning. They are io be met ai the Union Station by + he American Legion Drum and (Bugle Corps and are to stage a parade over the downtown streets cn route to their Lincoln headquarters. Detroiters in City A trio of Detroit pin leaders arrived this morning and opened the ■Blito city headquarters in the Sevrrin. Howard McCullough, past ((president of the Detroit city association, Jack Sedan, of the Detroit /Convention Bureau, and Herman Therry, long affiliated with the pin iigame in the Michigan metropolis, tfilong with several newspaper men, jimake up the ballot-seeking group. jfCity officials, along with a host of .entrants in the tournament, are to ferrive tomorrow night in several chartered railwav coaches. In the meantime, the executive committee of the Congress went •into a huddle at the Severin at 10 this morning to discuss contemplated changes in the rules and bylaw's of the organization. Treasurer Frank Pasdeloup arrived here westerday for the meeting and imanediately wen to the Fairground to '3ook over the tournament. President 'Augie Jankowsky was among last 'night's arrivals, along with several "other officials of the pin group,* Buffalo Tinman Totals 705 Frank Caruana, member of the touted H. Wrn. Pollack Poster Prints of Buffalo, went into first fplace in the individual events standings on the final shift yesterday afternoon. With counts of 225, 246 and 234 he totaled 705 pins, which was one better than the 704 posted by Louis Levine, the Chicago ace, last Sunday. His brilliant singles series combined with a 55C fin the team events and a 606 ir. the doubles gave him an aggregate of 1861 over the nine game route. The total w r as good for seventh place in the all-events standings. Joe Burmeister, a Faribault (Minn.) kegeler participating in his first A. B. C. tournament tossed games of 268, 189 and 221 for a 678 total that gained him fifth plaee in the individual standings. Hilmer Solander o? Iron River, Mich,, also gave the pins a severe lashing, connecting for a 671 that gave him a tie for eighth place. He had games of 236, 257 and 178. One change was registered among the leaders of the two-man event. Michael Gaines and William Sullivan of Elizabeth. N. J„ combined totals of 618 and 622 fbr a 1240 that put them in fifth place. Oklahomans Go Big The largest crowd of the tournament packed the Coliseum last night as the three squads of team entries took over the drives. Almost 3000 persons were assembled behind the alleys, and were treated to some nifty exhibitions, especially by the Champlin Refining Cos. of Enid, Okla. The boys from the Southwestern oil fields, seeking A. B. C. laurels for their first time, cracked out a 2911 total that placed them in ’ second place in the five-man division. Paced by Casey Mills’ 637 the flvesome tacked up games of 934, 1031 and 937. Other quintets in action during the evening failed to penetrate the standings of the top ten. Today's daylight activities on the Coliseum drives included two squads each of doubles and singles entrants. The doubles were carded at 11 o'clock this morning and 12:30 this afternoon, while the individuals were to see action at 11:45 and 1:15. Cincy Siars on Tonight The after-sundown program will find three full squads trying their luck at the tourney maples. The Initial squad, scheduled at 6:30. includes local and state booster teams, while the 8:30 squad is to bring out several classy aggregations from varimk parts of the country, along with two star local quintets. Percy Henry’s Lieber Lagers and Bill Holt’s Harpers Garage are the Indianapolis teams that will bear watching. " The windup of the dry s, firing should develop some real scoring for a full squad of 32 teams from Cincinnati and vicinity are to step across the runway leading to the alleys in search of scores that will land them well up in the tournament’s prize list.
