WPA PROGRAMS MAY START NEW CRAZE

'Answer Me This/ Designed to Send Listeners to Reference Books, Is Broadcast Mondays ‘Have You Heard?’ on Fridays Dramatizes Unusual Facts About Science, Nature, Literature, Industry and Art; Features Aired on NBC Chain. BY RALPH NORMAN ANEW craze in radio may be started by Uncle Sam's WPA Monday and Friday late afternoon programs, prepared by the United States Office of Education. They were broadcast for the first time last week on NBC's WEAF network, but the Friday program in the future is to be heard on NBC's WJZ outlet and affiliated stations Both programs are at 5:35. The Monday program, “Answer Me This,” is designed to send listeners to their dictionaries, encyclopedias and atlases for correct answers to the self-test, questions. The Friday edition of the “brainteaser” series, “Have You Heard?” utilizes dramatizations to bring to light unusual facts about science, nature, literature, art and industry.

Tn radio circles there is much speculation on possible effects of this type of program. Several broadcasters think anew craze, similar to the cross-word puzzle, may be started. The presentations, financed by a $75,000 WPA appropriation, are under the direction of William D. Boutwell, cditor-in-chief of the Office of Education. Production work is supervised by Maurice Lowell, the program “testmaster,” and preparation of scripts is under direction of Leo Roscncrans. The two series originate in Washington, are carried without charge by NBC. Talent from CCC and WPA ranks is to be used when possible. n a HERE arc a few sample questions from last week's broadcasts (the average person is expected to answer correctly five out of six): How’ many feet in a Scotland yard? Where do you go to buy a goober? How many legs has a full-grown Caucasian? Did George Washington write the Monroe Doctrine? What is the Prince of Wales’ first name? What cities do you think of when these five streets are mentioned—Broadway, Michigan-av, Prnnsylvania-av, Euclid-av, Tre-mont-st? B B B T. G. Dienhart, Indianapolis Municipal Airport manager, is to be guest speaker at 5:15 this afternoon on WFBM's School Sketches program, a broadcast sponsored by the Indianapolis Public Schools. He will discuss “Relation of Modern Air Travel to Development of Industry,” and will describe the part played by air transportation in flood relief work in the East. Music BY JAMES THRASHER WITH the advance of spring, musical seasons and radio programs of serious music are coming to an end. Tonight finds Lawrence Tibbett missing from the air waves, probably until next fall. Tomorrow’s daytime broadcasts, however, are of more than ordinary interest. The NBC Music Guild program, to be carried at 1 by WIRE, presents Mary and Virginia Drane in music for two violins, accompanied by Leone Pettigrew, harpist, and Vladimir Brenner, pianist. Their program is to contairt two sonatas by Archangelo Corelli and the Suite, Op. 6, by Eiuiene Goossens, conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and a gifted composer. Corelli (1653-1713) has been called the founder of modern orchestral writing. Noted in his own time as a talented violinist as well as composer, he held important positions in the courts of Germany and Italy. Because a mediocre violinist supplanted him in the service of Cardinal Ottoboni in Rome, it is said that Corelli died of grief. B B B AN a 11-Brahms program is scheduled for the regular broadcast of the Rochester Civic Orchestra, Guy Fraser Harrison conducting, at. 2 tomorrow over the NBC-WJZ network (WIRE at 2:15). Highlights are to be the first movement of the Concerto for Violin and ’Cello, played by Abram Boone and George Finckle, and the Third Symphony in F Major. Brahms worked on this symphony in 1882, completed it in 1883, and it was first performed in December of that year at a philharmonic concert in Vienna, with Hans Richter conducting. Hisses of the Wagner and Bruckner enthusiasts were drowned in the general applause. The work has been called the most poetic of the composer's four symphonies. Richter christened it the "Erocia;” Clara Schumann entitled it a “Forest Idyl;” Max Kalbeck thought it inspired by a statue of Germania, and the violinist Joachim found the story of Hero and Leander in the finale.
