DETROIT, NEW YORK OPEN DRIVES FOR 1937 A. B. C. MEET
Congress to Choose Site This Friday Bowlers From Two Cities to ‘Battle’ at Tomlinson Hall Session. BY BERNARD HARMON The subject of high scores in the American Bowling Congress tournament was of secondary importance today as pin leaders from New York and Detroit launched their campaigns to land the 1937 event, which will be awarded during the annual meeting of the Congress in Tomlinson Hall Friday afternoon. Jimmy Morrison, publicity chief of the New York Convention Bureau, arrived In the city Sunday ami opened the Gothamites’ headquarters in the Lincoln. A1 Lattin. president of the New York State and the New York City bowling associations, along with Bill Landgraf, vice president of the city association, William Pollack of Buffalo, past president of the Congress, and Harry Levine, another pin notable from the big city, assembled today and immediately touched off the campaign fireworks. Gotham Mayor Exported Mayor La Guardia is expected to be on hand to deliver a personal invitation to the delegates to bring the 1937 tournament to New York. If he is successful in his bid for the annual classic, it is to be staged in lhe National Guard Armory, which is within five minutes of the heart of the city. Representatives who are to present the Detroit bid are expected to arrive late today, and a battle for the next event will be under wAy. Howard McCullough and Harold Allen are to head the Auto City contingent and are reported loaded with enough propaganda regarding the Michigan site to won the 600 or more delegates expected at the meeting. Pins Topple in Singles esterday’s daylight activities found squads of minor events prize seekers monopolizing the alleys. Kenny Nelson, Minneapolis pastimer, nicked the maples for games of 235, 244 and 215 to total 694, which boosted him to third place in the individuals standings. Myron Conners, youthful Cleveland entrant, also found the tourney pins to his liking and with a 677 from games of 236, 228 and 213 took over fourth place in the standings. An additional trio of kegelers competing in the individual events Crashed the top ten. Bill Rose. Upper Darby, Pa„ collecting a 671 for sixth place; Elmer Kringel, Milwaukee, a 670 for seventh, and Chester Puster a 667 for eighth. The latter opened his series with one of the best single game efforts of the tourney, a 277. Herb Voss, another Milwaukeean, added series of 616. 630 and 633 for an 1879 to assume fourth place in the allevents. rekin Team Second Although 64 teams, practically all of them rated as topnotchers of the pin game, were in action on the two night squads, only one was able to penetrate the standings of the five leaders. Windsor Cigars, a Pekin illl.l quintet rolling on the final squad, cracked out games of 911 1007 and 990 for a 2908 that was good for second place. White paced his team with a 653 series. Elmhurst Gardens of Elmhurst, 111., rolling on the same squad, totaled 2886 to take seventh place. The Honolulus, who traveled nearly 5000 miles to participate in the classic, and the H. Wm, Pollack Poster Prints of Buffalo, both touted teams, crossed alleys together on the 8:15 shift, but neither was able to connect for an outstanding total. The New Yorkers collected a 2755 in their three games, while the boys from Hawaii garnered 2679 in their series. Although the 2810 pasted by the Iron Inn of Iron River. Mich*, was good for squad honors, it failed to land the team a place in the "big ten." Today's daylight program found pastimers who were in action with teams last night, rolling their minor events. Tonights activities call for the appearance of three full squads of five-man aggregations. practically all local teams. The 6:30 and 10:30 squads are solid Indianapolis booster teams, while at 8:30 several of the city’s crack quintets will face the maples along with 16 out-of-town teams. Indiana Wheel and Rim, Capital Ice Cos., Beck's Coal & Coke, Stahlhut Jewelers, Russet Cafeteria and Crystal Flash are local fivesomes expected to feature tonight’s 8:30 session.

THE Honolulus drew the biggest ovation of the tourney as they filed to their alleys. Jorgeson and Meure drew splits in their initial frames. Laura struck and Bond and Kelly turned in spares. . . . The Wisconsin Mutual Plate Glass Insurance team of Juneau, Wis., was made up of Catholic priests. They did a nice job of tumbling the maples. Among them was the Rev. John Koelzer, who belongs to the bowler's "Hall of Fame” as the result of a 300 game rolled in league competition. . . . Elmer Baumgarten was all smiles as the boys from the beach of Waikiki stepped to their alleys. They set anew record for distance travelled in the annual classic, coming almost 5000 miles to participate in the event. n a THE H. Wm. Pollack Poster Prints had plenty of pep as it opened its series. The team crossed alleys with the Honolulus and won over a large following of fans from the start. . . . The "best dressed" on the 8:15 squad were the Perth Amboy (N. J.) Elks who were decked out in lavender shirts. . . . John Ackerman, big pin mogul from Cleveland, was on hand for the evening sessions. "Greatest layout I've ever seen," said the Ohioan. , , . Charley Robinson, who runs the Iron River Inn at Iron River, Mich., anchored for the team bearing his name. And despite his 62 years, he did a nice job. e * a EVERY member of the Poster Prints struck in the initial frame of the middle game, but the . JMu 4 Frank Cgrusa, saa

In winning 18 of 29 contests, the Chaddmen have totaled 730 points to 619 for the rivalry furnishers, an average of 25.2 against 21.3.
