STANDINGS SHUFFLED AS TEAMS BOMBARD A. B. C. PINS

Chicagoans Hold Lead, but Other Spots Among First Ten Change at Fairground Local Fivesome Shoved Into Sixth Place; Louis Levine Goes to Front in Singles With 704: Also Setting Pace in Doubles Division. BY BERNARD HARMON New’ names today topped the list of standings for the annual American Bowling Congress tournament in progress at the State Fairground Coliseum. With the exception of the Oak Leafs Motors of Chicago, who lead the five-man division, last week's toprotchers were unable to hold their positions amid the heavy bombardment of the last week-end.

None of the 128 visiting teams trying their luck on the tourney alleys Saturday and last night were able to near the 3054 mark tacked up by the Windy City aggregation on Friday night. The nearest threat was a 2903, posted by Posturn. Eattle Creek, Mich., on the 10:15 shift last night. The cereal boys, paced by Kline’s 631 and Schweigert’s 617, tossed games of oi>7, 1030 and 916 for their brilliant scries, which netted them second place in the standings. Modern Woodmen of America, the Orrville (O.) fivesome that startled the pin world recently by posting a 3700 series, proved they were more than a lucky team, when the totaled 2887 in the Coliseum games. The series, rolled on the final shift last night, gave them fourth place. One pin behind the Woodmen stood Hcintz Kclvinators of Akron, 0., who also found the 10:15 squad of last night a nice spot to do some fancy scoring. Miller's High Life of Milwaukee, in action on the initial Sabbath evening shift, connected for a 2876 and now hold down seventh place. Ready Mixed Concrete, the Indianapolis team that spilled 2883 maples for anew booster record, was shoved down to sixth place. Lansing Pattern Works of Lansing, Mich., turned in a 2845 on Saturday night to edge in to tenth place.

Exlcr Tops All-Events Positions among the “big ten’’ of the minor events standings changed with every shift, and when the smoke of the battle had cleared with the finish of the 5:45 singles squad yesterday, Louis Levine of Cicero, 111., stood at the top in the sing es and, with his partner, Gus Stefsni, headed the two-man division. Leo Exler, St. Louis pinman, topped the all-events. Levine gained the lead in the singles Saturday through a 704 series, topping by two pins the former high of Harold Ingwalson, posted one week previously. His 680, along with Stefani’s 605, elevated them to the top in the doubles with a 1285. Exler collected a 586 in his team events, a 703 in the doubles and a 659 in his singles, totaling 1943 for the top spot in the all-events. Levine is second with 1941, Others to crash the first 10 in the ninegame standings over the week-end were H. Arndt of Cudahy, Wis., with 1858 and A. Chatfield of Albany, N. Y., with 1851. Arndt is in sixth place and Chatfield, ninth. Arbaugh in Tie W. Mikesell of Lansing, Mich., 1 and Hubert Exler, St. Louis, con-1 nected for totals of 666 and 664 on Sunday’s 4:15 singles shift. The former is tied for fourth place and Exlcr holds down seventh. A. Kelle of Detroit is in a three-way tie for tenth place with Ralph Arbaugh, the Indianapolis entrant, and Leo Exler, the all-events leader. The trio had 6595. Other major changes in the doubles standings during the two days of firing find Exler and his partner, Leonard Spnngmeycr, in second place with a 1262; A. Damico and A. Keller of Detroit and W. Stennett and W. Blomquist of Rockford, 111., tied for sixth place with 12355. With six squads in the minor events occupying the drives during today’s daylight session, a general shakeup in the present standings is expected. Pastimers whose teams saw action last night opened thendoubles and singles events at 9:30 this morning and are to continue until sundown, the last squad being scheduled to take over the alleys at 5:45. Team Events Tonight The team events will be resumed at 8:15 when a squad of the most colorful teams yet to appear faces the maples. Entries from scattered parts of the country, along with the famed Honolulu five, which traveled 5000 miles to take part in the event, are carded for action. A quartet of local .teams is also Included on the 8:15 program. Neil Mclntyre, one of the city's leading golf pros, is to lead his E-A Lubricants into the pin battle; Pete Ernst, popular figure around the Pritchett Alleys, is to leave his A. B. C. scoreboard duties to captain the Dutch Master Cigars. A1 Berberich and his Murphy 5 & 10s are to seek laurels in the event along with Bruce Johnson and his Pritchett Specials. Although the eyes of the large gallery are expected to be focused on the touted quintet from the land of lcis and hula dancers, aggregations from several other far-away cities will bear watching. From way down south comes the King Edward Cigars of Jacksonville, Fia.; from the East comes the Pollack Poster Prints of Buffalo, and a group of teams from New Jersey cities. Teams from Ponca City. Okla.: Juneau. Wis.; Eldorado. Kas.; Fairbault, Minn.; Detroit and a number of mid-West aggregations are also scheduled. Mileage traveled by the 28 invading teams probably would add to more than 50,000.

lOUIS LEVINE of Chicago, J above, is in first place in the singles division of the A. B. C. tournament, and W’ith his partner, Gus Stefani, tops the doubles division. The Chicagoan also holds second place in the allevents, which proves ha spilled plenty of maples during his twoday visit. Local Bowlers in K.-C. Key Places Schmitt, Cheney Doubles High, Murphy All-Events. Freddie Schmitt and Larry Cheney, Indianapolis bowlers, grabbed off the doubles lead in the national Knights of Columbus tourney in Detroit over the week-end. They posted a total of 1298. Schmitt turned in a £52 and Cheney 646, giving them a 90-pin lead. Johnny Murphy, Indianapolis, after opening with a 513 in the fiveman team event, soared to 694 in his doubles and 677 in singles, the total of 1884 boosting him into the lead of the all-events. James Morrison, former local boy, now with the New York City convention bureau, arrived yesterday to do a little campaigning for the Gothamites in their bid for the 1937 congress. . . . Guy Rutherford and George Davis were in action in the minor events yesterday, but the local “lads” failed to produce. , . . G. Maritz of Cleveland had an excellent opportunity to nab the lead in the singles Saturday. He opened with 232, 244, but too many open frames in his final tilt resulted in a 151 and a 627 total. Too bad. . , , Pete Howley and family dropped in at the Coliseum on their way to Martinsville. The Windy City pinster ivas looking over some of his “boys.” tt The New York Central teams from Albanv made the trip in three special coaches. . . . Black shirts dotted the lineup of teams in action Saturday night. Fordson Tractors of Detroit, King's Tavern Ale of Lansing and California Nuts of St. Louis w'ore the “mourning” outfits, and after the firing was over they all proved appropriate. . . . Quite a crowd was on hand for the Sabbath festivities. Many loyal rooters followed their favorites on the early morning shifts. . . . G. Johnson, a stage electrician from Chicago, hung up a 650 in his singles. a U tt To say that the big indoor classic is colorful includes more than the decorations this year, for every squad that appears on the alleys offers some new combination in uniforms. . . . Outstanding “best dressed” over the week-end were Smith Case. Detroit, with blue shirts, yellow ties and blue trousers; R'edford Ice Cream, Detroit, in maroon shirts; Miller-Burney Coal Cos. of Jackson. Mich., in tan and white combinations and Murphy's Grille of Trenton, N. J. in light green shirts and white flannel trousers.... The “3700 shooting” Modern Woodmen of Orrville, Ohio, crossed alleys with the touted Direct Sendee Oils, crack Minneapolis quintet. The fans gathered behind the two teams and were treated to some nice shooting, especially by the Ohioans. e tt a Leo Exler, leader in the allevents standings used a "dream strike” to reach the top. Winding up his Fairgrounji activities he needed a strike to'assume the lead over the nine-game route, and he got it—but how? On a nice-looking hit he left the ten pin standing, but two pins rolled across the alleys dropped into the gutter and it looked like it was all over for the Missourian, but one of the maples nipped the ten pin enough to send it over, for the much-needed strike. Exlcr's ball had been returned and he was ready to try for a spare when the pin toppled. . . . Sood of the Hollywood Recreations of Milwaukee "cleaned” the 4-6-9-10 for one of the best “shots” of the day. .. . Capt. George Jarvett sends his wishes for a successful tournament. The New Jersey pinster is to show here in the tourney at a later date.
