Chicago Five Rolls 3054 to Assume Lead Middle Game of 1128 Puts Oak Leafs ‘Over Hump’ at Fairground. BY BERNARD HARMON Oak Leaf Motors, the Cinderella Recreation team from Chicago, today stood at the top of the fiveman standings of the annual American Bowling Congress tournament. The most devastating attack dealt the elusive maples during the tourney’s 11 days of operation resulted from the speeding spheroids delivered by the Windy City aggregation as the 10:30 shift went through its paces last night. Led by Gaine's 655, the quintet tossed games of 979, 1128 and 947 for a total of 3054, which was ten pins better than the winning team total of the 1935 event at Syracuse. The middle game was the second best single effort in the annual classic's history, but it failed by far to surpass the 1186 record game posted by the first-place Milwaukee Tea Shops at the 1927 Peoria meet. Totals of other members of the new leaders were: Hymes, 637; Lyons, 617, Vanderpohl, 593, and Stack. 552. State Team in Fourth Place The Jerry Schultz Taverns, East Chicago, Ind., who also rolled on the final shift, nabbed fourth place, when thfcy connected for games of 907, 1000 and 962 for a 2869 total. Reezek's 630 was the team’s top solo count. A of quintets appearing on the 8:30 shift connected for totals that landed them among the top ten. Cheney-Thombley Recreation, touted Detroit flvesome, pounded the sticks to the tune of 2859 to land in fifth position in the five-man event. Pure Oil of Portsmouth, 0., turned in a 2819 for ninth place, while Moorman V-8 Club of Whiting, Ind., totaled 2811 for tenth position. K Last night's opening shift, made up of 32 booster teams sponsored by the Coca Cola Bottling Cos, of Indianapolis, found the team No. 3 rapturing honors with a 2600 series. Yesterday's daylight program included <wo shifts in minor event competition, the bulk of the entrants being made up of local entries. The duo of Pitts and Johnson with an 1106 was the top combination of the 1 o’clock doubles squad, while Russ Arbaugh with counts of 232, 181 and 246 totaled 659 to outshine all rivals in action on the 1:45 squad of Individuals. Jones and Clark with 1141 topped the two-man teams on the 2:30 shift, while A1 Holman’s 589 was the top series of the 3:15 singles entrants. Star Quintets to Appear With several crack teams scheduled over the week-end, scoring is expected to sky-rocket to new heights. The entire two-day program will find out-of-town aggregations occupying the alleys and a general shakeup in the standings in all divisions may be the result of the invading pinmen's visits. Tonight's 8:15 squad will find 14 New York Central Railroad teams from Albany, N. Y. monopolizing the drives. Some of the classiest pinment in the East are included in the railroaders lineups and they are apt to send some of the present leaders down the ladder. The Chrysler Motors, scheduled on the 10:15 squad, is one of Detroit’s touted flvesomes and they will also bear watching as they open their attack on the tourney maples. Milwaukee Sends Aces Tomorrow’s morning and afternoon activities in the coliseum will find minor events contestants in full sway again, but they will give way to 5-man teams as darkness approaches. The team events are to resumed at 8:15 when another full squad of visiting pinsters pace the decks in hopes of carving their names in the bowlers hall of fame. The initial shift of the evening will find six outstanding Milwaukee quintets in action. Team Carries 1033 Average Railbirds scanning the scoreboards of the 10:30 squad will .evidently direct their attention to the ones back of alleys No. 9 and 17. The former will carry the strikes and spares tossed by the Rosatto Barry Ebonites of Upper Darby. Pa., while on the No. 17 board will be seen the scores if the Direct Service Oil Cos. of Minneapolis. The Barrys are rated is one of the top combinations in tie vicinity of Philadelphia and its nembers are reputed to be among tb best in the East. "he Minneapolis quintet is a mtnber of the Twin City Classic League and totes an average of 103. Thursday night it registered theflrst errorless three-game series tha section of the country has seen in sme time. It came as the team post'd its eighteenth consecutive 3006 series.
