Invading Fives Expected to Shuffle Standings of Pin Leaders in Whirls Tonight Detroit, Columbus, Chicago and Milwaukee Squads on Deck at Fairground; Pace-Makers Hold Places as Locals Bowl; Schornstein’s 643 Best.
BY BERNARD HARMON Out-of-town quintets, including crack aggregations from Detroit, Columbus, O, Chicago and Milwaukee are slated to go into action in the American Bowling Congress tournament at the State Fairground Coliseum tonight. The evening's activities will open when 32 teams entered by the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Indianapolis march to their respective alleys at 6:30. The visitors will see action on the 8:30 and 10:30 squads. Chene -Trombly Recreation of Detroit and Wagner Gambrinus of Columbus, 0., are the star quintets scheduled to face the maples at 8:30. Both have undisputed reputations as tournament bowlers and are capable of. shaking up the standings of the 10 leading teams of the five-man event. Employers Mutual, one of Milwaukee's star fivesomes, is slated to take a whirl at the tourney pins on the 10:30 shift. The team finished second in the Peoria tournament two years ago, having topped the five-man aggregations until the final night of the event. George E. Browne No. 1 and Oak Leaf Motors of Chicago and J. M. Kralovec & Son of Cicero, Ill., are other star-studded quintets scheduled on the final shift. Hawaiian Team Arrives A quartet of the Honolulus team of Hawaii, who traveled 5000 miles to take their turn on the Coliseum drives, arrived here yesterday afternoon and were accorded a real Hoosier welcome by a group of city and bowling officials. Harry Bond, a member of the team, stopped off at Salem, Ill., to visit his mother,
Tourneygrams By Harmon Ray Fister, a bowling alley proprietor from Bellevue, Ky., was a visitor at the Coliseum yesterday. His Bellevue Alleys quintet is scheduled to go into action on the tourney drives April 7. ... W. V. Thompson, Brunswick - Balke - Collender representative from Chicago, who is is charge of the “300 Club tournament,” was a visitor at both matinee and night sessions yesterday. .. . Herman Deupree, local ABC publicity man, was in action during the matinee. . . . Pop Sheller, the “big shot” of the Service Club, played a part in the tea-time activities. . . . Carl Harper tossed eight consecutive strikes in his final game. It helped him to a 245 game. The Courthouse Lawyers marched to their alleys clad in their “robes of justice,” each carrying a large book in one hand and a bowling ball in the other. # # # Lefty Hahn tossed the initial strike of the 6:30 squad. He performed with the Continental Opticals. . . . When asked how he was getting along, Jim Custard of McKinney Treasurers, answered, “I'm glad to be here, and I may be a success.” But was he? . . . Fred Eberg was in action with one of the Optician teams. Freddie is almost a stranger on the alleys of late. . . . The initial strike of the 8:30 squad was the result of G. Brannon's speedy delivery. He is a member of the Union City Boosters. . . . McGuff Coals of Muncie looked very attractive in their plaid shirts . . . and so did the local Nip 'n' Sip boys with their white shirts lettered in red and red ties. .. . Another of the long string of Kernels was on the decks last night. Leonard rolled with the Kernel Opticals in the optician group. # # # The Indiana National Bankers sported red ties to set off their white shirts. . . . And the Geo. O. Desatauls wore yellow with blue lettering. ... A trio of the O. K. Warehouse team of Fort Worth, Tex., arrived during the evening session. They were topped by 10-gallon hats, and are reported ready for action tomorrow night. . . . Spiv Krause, 60-year-old Pennsylvania Railroad veteran, threw seven consecutive strikes in one of his games. Not bad for an old timer, eh. . . . Paul Roberts led the 10:30 squad across the alleys carrying Little Joan Toles, the Standard Oil Co. mascot. The Drill Press team of Schwitzer-Cummins Co. also flaunted a mascot. She was Skippy Easterday, 4-year-old daughter of one of the team members. . . . E. Morrison of Goodyear Tire Service threw the first strike of the 10:30 shift. . . . Every EmRoe Sporting Goods team member missed in the first frame. . . . The “best dressed” of the final shift were the 10 Schwitzer-Cummins teams who were all outfitted in various colors of shirts. . . .The Pivot City Inks wore the popular black.

who is seriously ill, but the remainder of the quintet, Captain Jesse Kelly, Peter Laura, Herbert Meure and John Jorgenson, stepped off the train at 1:40 and were whirled to their quarters in the Washington. They later visited the scene of hostilities at the Fairground and were highly elated at the layout that met their eyes. The team is scheduled to roll Monday night at 8:30. Railroaders Go Big Leaders in all divisions of the big indoor classic remained undisturbed at the conclusion of yesterday’s firing. Harry Schornstein, a member of the local Insurance League, threatened to overhaul one of the top 10 in his individual series, but he fell a few pins short with a 643 that should pay well when the tourney’s cash prizes are awarded. He used games of 199, 206 and 238 for the brilliant series. Schornstein also fared well in his doubles appearance for with his partner, Cecil Bevis, another Insurance loop luminary, the pair outscorcd every combination on the afternoon squads wtih a 1169. Clell Dodd and Eddie Steinecker, two Big Four Railroad pastimers, combined their totals for a 1132 to nab honors of the two-men squad that fired at the maples on the 1 o’clock shift. Harry Kennedy, another Big Four entry, took honors over all individuals of the 1:45 shift with a 619 series. The 32 teams that faced the tourney maples on the 6:30 squad represented various local firms and were competing in the booster division. White-Haines Opticals outscored all rivals with a 2429 total. The top aggregations of the 8:30 and 10:30 shifts, also booster teams, were Clevenger's Plumbers of Muncie and Schwitzer-Cummins Engineers, a local quintet. The Muncie lads emerged with a 2654, while the local pastimers used a 2484 to cop their honors. PETERMAN AWARDS 10 SHORTRIDGE LETTERS Coach Kenneth Peterman announced today that all 10 members of the Shortridge High School basketball team which won the Indianapolis sectional tourney have received varsity monograms. Stars Are Added to Mat Program Steele and Speer to Mix in Semi-Windup. What stacks up as one of the put* standing mat cards of the indoor season with several of the nation's foremost grapplers parading their wares is promised by the Hercules A. C. at the Armory next Tuesday night. As an added feature, Art (The Great) Shires will referee the main go and semi-windup. As previously announced, “Jumping’’ Joe Savoldi, 218, battles "Dynamite’’ Gus Sonnenberg. 212, Boston, in the headliner. Both are recognized as title contenders. Sonnenberg was undisputed world champion in 1928. Ray Steele, 219, crack Glendale (Cal.) husky who is near the top when it comes to rating stars, swings into action against Frank Speer, 236, rough Atlanta performer, in the semi-windup. Speer is a first-class “meanie" and one of the South's leading grapplers. I_Quarter-Century in~Sa‘nie LocatiorT^^, Famous For Steaks and Good Food Charley’s Restaurant 144 E. Ohio St.
