PITTSBURGHERS THINK FLOOD IS LARK. GIRL SAYS Air Stewardess Reports, Smoky City Streets Are ‘Little Creeks.’ BY TOM OCHILTREE 'Pittsburgh people can take it. Thc.v thinjc this flood is a lark.” That's the way Miss Dorothy Hutchings, TWA hostess, put it when her plane landed at Municipal Airport yesterday.She rode through with flight one from New York and had passed over large stretches of the flooded district. After reaching Camden, N. J„ the pilots went up through the low ceiling and held an altitude of 1100 feet. "It wasn’t until five minutes before we came to Pittsburgh that I got a look at the ground,” she .-aid. •’lt was like flying over a lake, except once in a while you would see houses sticking out of the water. Eight Planes Circled Field "Then we dropped down in the Pittsburgh port. What a bedlam! There were eight planes circling over the field, all trying to land. We got down on time, but were held up for an hour while they tried to clear up some of the air traffic congestion,” Miss Hutchings added. “About 100 people were waiting at the port to get out. There was no electricity and no drinking water. Some there said they had been drinking soda pop for the last 12 Hours, and they were getting tired of it. "Most of them laughed about the flood and asked if we thought it was going to get worse. I Pilots Were ”AU-In” Her pilots were “all-in” when the big ship made Columbus, 0., this afternoon, and M. L. Hobbit took the relief trick on west to Kansas City. He had been over the flooded area last night and said it looked like more snow was melting l.i the mountains. “Downtown Pittsburgh is like a deserted city,” Miss Hutchings declared. “As we flew over, it looked like little creeks were flowing between the tall buildings. Those were the streets all right, but there wasn’t anybody double parked on them.” Miss Hutchings also flew over Johnstown late Tuesday and saw flood waters rising in that city. She lives in St. Louis, but you can tell by the way she talks that she grew up in Mississippi.

GUARD ARTILLERY TO ORGANIZE NEW BAND 139th Unit to Take Enlistments for Regiment Group. Bp United I’rr a* CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind., March 20.—Enlistments in anew regimental band for the One hundred thirty-ninth Field Artillery. Indiana National Guard, are to be taken here tonight. The unit, to be composed of 28 musicians, is being organized following transfer of the band from Lebanon, where it had been located since 1923. Lieut. Carl Deßard said the unit will be directed by Joe Gremelspacher. The director is to be made a warrant officer when the unit is mustered in April 6. REJECTS WATER PLAN Noblesville Council Turns Down Proposed Purchase of Company. Bp Ini led P'rcx * NOBLESVILLE. Ind., March 20 The proposal of Mayor Horace Brown that the city purchase the Noblesville water company was tabled by a vote of 4 to 1 by the city council last night. Opponents of the proposal said they doubted receipts would pay interest and fund the bonds, and that as a result water rates would have to be increased.
