STATE TEAMS SEEK TO DISPLACE NATIONAL PIN LEADERS
Noblesville Band to Pace Parade of Hoosier Squads on A. B. C. Alleys Tonight Hudepohl Quintet Also to Bring Large Delegation From Cincinnati; Taxicab Association Entries Fail to Crash ‘Big Ten.’ BY BERNARD HARMON When the seven teams representing the Noblesville find.) Elks parade to their respective alleys during tonight’s program of the American Bowling Congress tournament at the State Fairground Coliseum the crack Elks Band of 30 pieces will lead the procession. The Noblesville musicians have won national fame and are directed by Raymond Caca, who is also leader of the popular local Shrine Band.
The Hamilton County entrants are scheduled to take over the drives on the 8:30 shift, along with teams representing the P. R. Mallory Cos., Indianapolis Postofflce employes and other local aggregations. The Noblesville pinmen will be accompanied by a large delegation of followers, and much enthusiasm is expected to result as the seven quintets go into action. Another noisy session should result as the preceding shift steps to the alleys, for included in the 32 teams is a quartet of Hudepohl Beer entrants, who will be supported by a large gallery of fans from Cincinnati. The teams were entered by Frank Quelsser, onetime professional baseball player, and expect to make up in enthusiasm what they lack in pin spilling. The balance of the teams on the squad will be composed of quintets representing various local firms. At 10:30, entrants from various points throughout the state will monopolize the tourney drives. Terre Haute, Richmond, Logansport and Shelbyville will be well represented among the quintets in action on the final shift. None of the 96 flvesomes facing the pins during yesterday’s activities were able to dislodge any of the leading 10 aggregations. Scoring during the matinee session failed to develop any sensational totals, as teams representing the Indianapolis Taxicab Association and Indianapolis Hotel Associations faced the maples. Indianapolis Taxicab Association No. 11 topped all other teams on this shift with a 2303 series.

High school and college students made up the bulk of the 3:45 squad . . . A trio of moving picture machine operator teams were numbered among the Indianapolis Taxicab Association aggregations. . . . Jim Wulle, Butler Univers ty football star, performed with the Taxicab team No. 5. . . . Barney Barneclo, a stagehand, recorded plenty of fouls in his initial game. . . . “It was the shoes” explained Barney. E. Shively of the Taxicab Association No. 11 opened his middle game with four consecutive strikes. He left the seven pin on a presumably good hit and then missed. . . . W. Fisher tossed five straight strikes and then ended his string with a foul. . . . Chris Rassmussen was among the spectators in yesterday's matinee session. His son Paul was in action. . . . Mike Mulry battled the maples for one of the Taxicab teams. ... So did his "kid brother." tt tt tt Ben Brumley, a “movie operator,” was very much pleased. He was forced off one of the Taxi teams, and the kegeler who took his place failed .to produce a score that neared Ben's total. . . . Tom Harmenson was troubled with splits. . . . Herb Whiteman looked like a big leaguer as leadoff man for The Indianapolis Times Mechanical Department. ... If any taxi drivers were numbered among the pastimers representing the taxi companies, they were certainly faster than usual. ... So says Paul Crosier, who tried in vain to get a lift for several out-of-town visitors Saturday night. . . . The crowd thinned as midnight approached last night, but they should be on hand late tonight. Kermit Bunnel. who plays a little baseball, football and basketball around Butler University did a little bowling with Taxicab No. 11. The 12 L. S. Ayres & Cos. teams wore white shirts, white flannel trousers, and in the spirit of the day, a green carnation. . . . How’s this for consistency, Harrison Miller’s 135, 133, 135 for the Taxicab Association No. 8 and Clay Stonecipher’s 175, 175, 174 for the L. s. Ayres Mendel Luggage? Doc Longsworth and Peery Ghere were in the audience looking over the Indianapolis Glove entrant. . . . The long-awaited match game between Scotty Johnson’s Score Book team and Jim Nolan’s Score Board operators was to take place this afternoon. Elmer Baumgarten was expected to roll with the Johnson outfit.
ITALIANS PEDAL INTO TIE FOR 6-DAY LEAD By United Pres* CHICAGO. March 18.—The German team of Gustav Kilian and Heinz Vopel shared the lead of the international six-day bicycle race with the Italian pair, Ferdinand Grillo and Alvara Georgetti, as the grind passed its fifty-seventh hour today. The Germans succeeded in shaking loose from Jerry Rodman, Chicago, and Bobby Thomas, .Kenosha, Wis., with whom they had shared the lead previously, and held down first place Mone for a while. Grillo and Georgetti caught up during a night of wild riding, in which Gerard Debaeta, teamed with A1 Letoumer, took a bad spill. Manager Harris Thinks Pitching Will Improve nap a a a Senator Moundsmen Displayed Form Late Last Season; Whitehill Is Leader of Pack.
BY JOE WILLIAMS Times Special Writer ORLANDO, Fla., March 18.— I The Washington ball team, which finished in sixth place In the American League last year, a matter of 27 games back of the winners, is putting in its spring licks here. The Senators are hoping to prove by subsequent demonstrations on the field that their 1935 experience was all a mistake, and possibly it was because Mr. Rogers Hornsby, for one, says if the season had lasted another week his St. Louis Browns would have climbed a notch higher and the Washingtons would have finished seventh.
But be that as it may, Mr. Bucky Harris, who is sort of graduate manager of the Washingtons in that he returns to the campus at odd intervals to coach the varsity, insists his young men will prove the surprise of
baseball this year, and I suppose he means as baseball players. They could prove the surprise of baseball by appearing on the field in long cotton night gowns, running the bases on motorcycles or playing 10 men in the outfield. This, of course, is all very silly, yet on
Williams
second thought Mr. Harris’ pitching problem would be vastly simplified if he could play 10 men in the outfield. One of the reasons why the Washingtons finished where they did last year was that all the pitchers turned out to be relatives of the opposing hitters. To be specific, they turned out to be cousins. Along toward the close of the season some of the pitchers started to put something on the ball besides an apology. It may be that they were thinking about 1936 contracts. Anyway, Earl Whitehill, to cite an example,\won eight in a row, and there were other belated manifestations of ability, ana ONLY one club in the league scored more runs than the Washingtons and this was the pennant winning Detroits. The main difference between the club that won the pennant and the club that finished sixth was pitching. The Detroits not only scored enough runs to win their ball games but their pitchers kept the opposing hitters in check. On the other hand, while the Washingtons scored more than enough runs to win their ball games their pitchers couldn't protect the advantage created by the hitters. Admitting all this. Mr. Harris is confident his pitching will be j much better this year. Whitehill is the best pitcher on the staff. There ' are some who say he is the staff. Mr. Harris also looks to Buck Newsom for considerable help. He was bought from the Browns for S4O,- ; 000 last season but broke a knee cap ! soon after reporting and was of small use to the club. Mr. Newsom is a large oily-haired gent from Hartsville, S. C., who throws with his right and thinks with his left. He is by way of being a card in the social sense, if not | a positive scream, this by his own admission, and the newsmen gathered here are breathless in anticipation of his first display of eccen-1 tricity. sr *t SO far Newsom’s flair for the unusual has been restricted to the use of a fork instead of a knife as a conveyance for food, and this in a gent of Mr. Newsom’s type is j quite unusual; but the newsmen are i certain there are exciting days ahead because Mr. Newsom passionately feels his future as a pub-1 Uo character lies in gaudy man-

nerisms. He just hasn’t got started yet. Besides Whitehill, Linke and Newsom, Mr. Harris has James Deshong, formerly of the New York Yankees: Jack Russell, who has been around for ten years; Monte Weaver, the college professor who helped win a pennant for the Washingtons in 1933; Peter Appleton, who won 22 and lost 9 for Montreal in the International League last year; Henry Coppola, who is nice to his mother, and a couple of other fellows named Marmaduke. Mr. Harris seems to be counting on Appleton more than somewhat. This gent returns to the majors under a different name. He used to be known as Jablowski, Matagowski, Bernstein, Bernstein and Bernstein, or some such title, but he couldn’t win. As soon as he changed his name he became a man-eating tiger on the mound, thereby proving Shakespeare knew nothing about a low fast one inside. a a a THE general efficacy of improving pitching by this practice may be open to question, but if Mr. Appleton, nee Jabolowski, et cetera, fails to win, the Washington customers, singularly outspoken in their criticism, will bestow more new and interesting names on the gent than he ever realized existed. Taking it by and large. Mr. Harris’ pitching prospects seem to be at least fair. He is weak behind the bat. Cliff Bolton, his catching ace, is scarcely a standout. The infield may develop into a fine combination. Cecil Travis is much better at shorn at third. The 20-year-old John Lc ~’’s, up from Chattanooga, moves around third base like Pie Traynor in his earlier days. Buddy Ltyer, the league's champion hittp*-, * ill be back at second and Joe Kuhel at first. Incidentally, the phenomenon of Myer, an ordinary hitter, suddenly developing into the best hitter in the league was explained to me today. It was quite simple. The young Mississippian quit smoking And how did that make him a better hitter? . . . “Well, it made me stronger and I was able to get more length to my blows,” he said.

Viva Ville! Speaking of ‘Semi’ Cage Sidelights Here and Other Places.
(Continued From Page Ten) taneously with a burst of applause that had volume to spare. . . . That’s on the word of a Kokomo scribe, too. . . . Concerning tourney survivors which met during the season . . . Kokomo and Central of Fort Wayne, first round foes at Muncie, never have hooked up on the hardwood. . . . However, Newcastle whipped Central, 35-31, and lost to Kokomo, 23 to 29, this year. . . . Newcastle plays Warsaw in the other Muncie first-rounder. . . . Warsaw hasn’t met any of the other three. . . . Does that help you with your win-ner-pickings? . . . tt tt tt T OGANSPORT’S BERRIES trounced Riley of South Bend, their first trial at Gary, 31 to 23, last Dec. 27 . . . Frankfort later trimmed Logansport . . . But the Hot Dogs will be meeting Froebel for the first time . . . Tech of our own East Side was the only North Central rival to come near beating Frankfort during the season. . . It was a 31-31 tie . . . Which means what in case the Casemen win the champeenship? . . . Frankfort has reached what amounts to the state finals 12 times in the last 15 years . . . And emerged with the ' title twice . . . About Central of Fort Wayne . . . Murray Mendenhall is the coach . . . The Tigers had a successful season . . . They floated through their sectional and regional with the greatest of ease . . . But their opposition was far from stonewallian . . . Since the tourney started the Centrals have copped six games by margins ranging no lower than 15 points and as high as 38 . . . What’s more, their lowest score for a single game during the six sleepers was 41 . . . tt n tt A POPULAR principal and handler of high school athletic affairs is Paul F. Addison of Muncie ... He is one of the few who allow themselves to admit that newspapers lend a helping hand in drawing spectators to the games, and recognizes their representatives accordingly ... He is generous and courteous with his press tickets, as any newspaper man in these parts wiil testify ... Yet, his gym is no more overrun with free passengers than those of his ticket thrifty brethren . . . His generosity is treated with respect . . . Muncie was awarded sectional, regional and semi-final meets and deserved them as far as their host school is concerned . . . Newcastle is Muncies most rivalrous foe, you know . . . Where other principals would have planted a cordon of cops around the goals, what do you suppose Mr. Addison did when Newcastle's boys started clipping the nets after winning? . . . He waded right out and helped the lads snip ’em down! . . . it’s the principal of the thing that I admire . . . Chicken dinners were had by all Kokomo players in a celebration feast last night . . . Wonder how many chronic state finals attenders will show up at Butler fleldhouse next Friday morning from force of habit?
