OUT-STATE PINMEN BEGIN INVASION OF A. B. C. ALLEYS
Youthful Windy City Team Features Today’s Parade of Bowlers to City Drives Samuelson Lads Roll at Fairground; String of Strikes Nets Howard Abraham, Local Kegeler, 256 for Best Single Game of Tourney to Date. BY BERNARD HARMON Initial squads of the long parade of pinmen from all parts of the nation who are to pace the decks of the American Bowling Congress tournament alleys are scheduled to take over the drives at the State Fairground Coliseum today. Leading the array or star out-of-town kegelers who are to fire at the tournament maples are the Samuelson's Kids of Chicago, scheduled on the 8:30 shift tonight.
This collection of youthful pas- j timers, one of the country’s out- 1 standing younger quintets, was organized five years ago by Jack Samuelson, a Chicago bowling alley proprietor. Samuelson, at the time, assembled the quintet in an experimental effort to develop a team of champions by starting them young. He has not been disappointed, for the lads, four of them now 17 years of age and the fifth, 16, have cracked out many noteworthy totals in their five years of partnership. Their first major engagement, the Chicago city tournament of 1930, found them finishing their three games with a total of 1725, whereas in the 1935 event they accumulated 2730 pins. Their A. B. C. appearance will bear watching, for in the 1934 tournament at Peoria they finished “in the money.” The quirttet is captained by Jack Samuelson Jr., son of the organizer. South Bend on Hand South Bend was to be well represented on the tourney drives this afternoon, when 32 teams, made up of Studebaker Corporation employes converged on the alleys at 3:30. A squad of local quintets were carded to appear on the 1 o'clock shift, but the remaining spots on the program of today and tomor- i row are to be dominated by invading aggregations. Tomorrow's daylight shifts will be made up of doubles and singles squads, while the evening's menu calls for the return of the five-man teams. Firemen Singe Polire The “fend'’ between members of the Police and Fire Departments teams was renewed yesterday as the 11 o'clock shift took over the 32 tournament alleys. Although none of the quintets of the two safety organizations crashed the “top ten'' in the standings, the rivalry brought out some exciting bits of pin spilling. The smoke eaters were in a jubilant mood as- 13 of their 16 teams outscorcd the “flatfeet.” According to statistics, the firemen claim a moral victory by a big majority. Although their top team, the Fire Dept. No. 16 lost hy 10 pins to Mike Morrissey's leading police team, the hook and ladder boys won 27 of the 32 matches. Abraha.n Gets Hot The highlight, of last night’s 6:30 squad was the 257 game hung up by Howard Abraham, local pinmen who performed with the Phillips 66 team. The big count was the top single game of the tourney to date. Coupled with games of 184 and 185 it gave him a 626 total and aided his team to a 2617, which gave them seventh place in the five-man standings. Other aggregations performing ori the squad failed to burn up the drives and finished out of the “top ten.” A large crowd, rivaled only by the opening night's collection of pin fans, was on hand to greet the 8:30 and 10:30 shifts. Under the banner of "Catholic Night,” 64 teams, sponsored by Catholic organizations and local merchants faced the maples. A great ovaion greeted the squads as they paraded across the approach and marched to their respective alleys. Despite the fact that many of the city's outstanding pinmen were numbered among the performers, only one team crashed the "big ten” in the team standings General Tires used a 2613 to take ninth place. 1 OyRNEYGRAMS— A motorcycle copper, Harry O’Mara, tossed four consecutive strikes ip his middle game. Being his first appearance on any alleys, it was a record. Lieut. Pat McMahon tossed a blank in the first frame of his middle
