64 Teams to Bowl in Two Special Shifts Kernel-Selmier Take Lead in Doubles; News Paces Fivesomes. BY BERNARD HARMON Sixty-four teams, sponsored by various Catholic organizations and local firms tonight are to take over the alleys of the American Bowling Congress tournament on the 8:30 and 10:30 shifts. It will be known as Catholic Night and many of the city's outstanding bowlers are to be in action The remaining 32 teams of the Indianapolis Police and Fire Departments competed on the 11 a. m. shift today, while Insurance League teams and Lions’ Club members are to roll on the 6:30 *hift. The tournament's initial doubles and singles entries dominated the drives during yesterdays matinee sessions. The two-man combinations opened fire on the maples on .The 2 o’clock squad, while the individual events followed 45 minutes later. Dr. Joe Kernel coupled ’With Tom Selmier to nab the lead over other duos with 1182. Dr. Kernel reached a 614 total through games of 212, 181 and 221. Selmier totaled 568. Bob Heuslin and Tom Lippincott, with a total of 1136 went into second place. The two top combinations are local entries. A pair of Mishawaka kegelers, Harry Wareham and Harry Stroobandt. rested in third place as ihe result of their 1134. The latter “carried” the combination over with a 617 from games of 214. 235 and 168. Wareham Tops Singles Wareham continued to pound the pocket in his singles appearance, tnd. with a. 618, nabbed first place ih that division. He hooked up games of 201, 214 and 203. Second place also was held down by jMishawaka pinman. Mike Scvcra taking the spot through a 600. He turned in games of 206. 178 and 225. Heuslin finished with 591 for third place. Youth had another fling as the 8:45 squad of five-man aggregations sot, under way. All of the 32 team', were made up of local grade school, high school and college students, rolling under the colors of the Indianapolis Hotel Association. The youngsters went to work with much enthusiasm, although they were ineligible for prizes. Scoring on Upgrade Scoring was on the upgrade as the j teams of the 6:30 shift waded through their games, and at the finish of the hostilities new leaders had been established in the five-man \ event. The Indianapolis News, paced by j Charley Seller’s 631 and Burl Scudder's 600. turned in the top team total of the tournament, a 2779, to assume first place. Gray. Gribben & Gray rested in second place as the result of its 2730. Bennett and j Schwartz were the team's leading scorers, the former totaling 632 and ! Schwartz 602. A 2691 boosted In- - dianapolis office Supply into third. The best solo series of the tourney aided the aggregation in amassing its total. Freddie Schmitt was the hero, a pair of 221 sand a 211 netting him 653. Other brilliant, series were tacked up by individuals whose teams failed to place among the leaders. Clarence Irish gave Optimists No. 1 a 628. Casey Jones donated a like count to George J. Mayer Cos.. Ray Gest. hammered out a 610 for Second Reformed No. 3 and Freddie Herther paced his Pcrine Oils with a 609. Big Four Enthusiasm Lester Wise led the 160 bowlers of the Big Four Railroad League to their respective alleys as the 8:30 shift got under way. Each member of the railroad's 32 teams was clad In a white shirt and dark tie. Although they failed to provide fancy totals, the squad displayed much pep and enthusiasm. Top individual scorers of the squad were Murin. 622, and Lewis with 601. The final squad of the evening wound up in the wee hours of the morning, and when the scores were sifted, nothing noteworthy was found. TOURNEYGRAMS—Harry Stroobandt. half of the Mishawaka doubles team that landed in third place is a southpaw. He had his ball working in the middle affair, connecting for five strikes in a row. . . . Collier, in his doubles appearance, had six consecutive strikes in his second game. He then missed the head pin. but he got over with a 342. . . . Wilbur Rosener and Earl Hueber. the Power <fc Light Cos. combination. ceased their seasons •’feud” and doubled together. . . . Sully J. Bates, inventor of the “Hates grip” is in town loaded with testimonials of the success of the ‘‘new-fangled apple." /Joe Markey. younger brother of the famous Chuck, performed with Severin Hotel No. 3. The quintit was garbed in maroon shirts and ked like r bunch of big leaguers. ey topped the scoring of the 3:45 squad, nosing out Severin Hotel No. 4by one stick. The score was 2273 to 2272. . Heinie Weimer. one of the local family of bowling Wringers was in action with one of the schoolboy aggregations and drew a round of applause as he- tossed the initial strike of the squad. . . . Hoagy O'Gara. who is more used to tossing ’em over in softball games whs a member of one of the hotel quintets. . . . Thomas of the Severn No. 22 did some nifty dances at tne foul line, but the bell eventually caught up with him. The blue-shirted McCullough Cos. made a nice appearance as they filed to their alley. . . Another Jbhns is in the pin game. Little Hnymond. son of Frank and Race appeared with Severin No. 16. . Hughie Harrigan. who does a little pin founding himself, was on hand to cheer his youthful offspring. Hug hie Jr., who bowled with a hotel five. . . . Richard Kassberg was tfte youngest participant of the afternoon. He is 11 years old. . . . •Sam (Kewpie) Jacobs propelled his spinning ball into the 1-3 pocket — ——

It’s in the Air! Two Perfect Scores Rolled

Dusting off the alleys at two bowling parlors, William Shaul of Syracuse, N. Y., and Fred Tuckman of the Indianapolis Sigma Alpha Tau Fraternity team, attained the perfection of pin topplers yesterday with 300 scores. Mr. Shaul, a veteran, who with his Markson Furniture team of Syracuse will face the drives in the A. B. c. March 27, “warmed up” for the pin classic at Pritchett’s with a perfect count, it marked the first time lie has reached the throne. Tuckman, who rolled scores of 170. 179 and 188 at the A. B. C. the previous night, tried a practice game at Parkway Alleys yesterday to prove to himself that there was better stuff in his hurling arm. The perfect score justified his faith.
