Efrem Zimbalist, is tG appear as guest soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Antonio Modarelli conducting, on its weekly program over NBC-WJZ (WIRE) at 7 tonight. For the orchestra's selections, Mr. Modarelli has chosen Elgar’s march, ‘‘Pomp and Circumstance”; RimskyKorsakoff's "Dance of the Tumblers” from “The Snow Maiden”; the Habanera from the Indian opera, "Natoma,” by Victor Herbert, former conductor of the orchestra, and Berlioz’ “Rackoczy March.” Mr. Zimbalist is noted for his modesty as a man and integrity as an artist, as one whose distinguished interpretations never astonish by mere technical display. His contributions to this evening's program are to include the "Prize Song” from Wagner's “Die Meistersinger,” a Hungarian Dance by Brahms, and the last movement of the Mendelssohn E Minor Concert o. M tt tt Anton Dvorak’s Fifth Symphony, “From the New World,” is to take up the major part of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra's broadcast tonight, on a program which closes the serire. An arrangement of the Bach E Major Prelude and the Finale from Wagner's “Rheingold ’ also are to be heard. The concert is at 10:35 over NBC, WEAF (WIRE at 11). Os the “New World” Symphony, Dvorak wrote to his friend. Oskar Nedbal, composer, who conducted the first Berlin performance: , “I send you Kretzschmar's analysis of the symphony, but omit that nonsense about my having made use of ’lndian’ and ’American’ themes—-that is a lie. I tried to write only in the spirit of those national American melodies.” The work was written in 1892-93. when Dvorak was director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York. Most Czech authorities agree that the symphony is the expression of a homesick Bohemian in America, stupefied by the din and hustle of anew life, and longing for his native land.
