BY RALPH NORMAN RADIO will blast another tradition when the Mutual System, probably with WLW participating, this month starts a series of early morning broadcasts featuring “name” bands and prominent movie stars and stylists. As we've always belonged to the school that believed orchestia members, except in case of Arc never arose before noon, breakfasted leisurely while we lunched, this to us is news. On the morning of March 19 and 26. Ben Bernie and All the Lads, like the good
business men they are, will be up bright and early for an 8 o'clock broadcast. After a few weeks of
Bernie, the the “name” band will change. Donahue <fc Coe, advertising agents, already have signed 15 large and epartment stores ao cooperative sponsors. . . . Kate Smith isn’t alone with her stairclimbing adventures caused by

Music BY JAMES THRASHER Beethovens only opera, “Fidelio,'’ is to be on the air for the first time at 12:55 tomorrow, on both NBC net-> works (WIRE), when it is revived by the Metropolitan Opera Cos. after a lapse of six seasons. Kirsten Flagstad is to have the title role, her first non-Wagnerian part at the Metropolitan; Rene Maison is to be the Florestan, and Ludwig Hoffmann, Don Pizarro. Other principals are Julius Huehn, Emmaunel List, Editha Fleischer and Haas Clemens. Artur Bodanzky is to vonduct. The opera's libretto is based on Bouilly's "Leonore, or Conjugal Love,” and was prepared for Peethoven by Sonnleithncr. It is a Story of Leonore’s heroic and successful efforts to save her husband, Florestan, doomed to die in a dungeon, because he incurred the displeasure of Don Pizarro, governor of the State Prison. The work, originally called “Leonore.” gained its present title from the name the heroine assumed, along with masculine attire, when she entered the prison. “Fidelio” was performed first in Vienna in 1805, was coldly received and was withdrawn after three nights. It was revised, but did not enjoy success until 1814. Os the four overtures the last, “Fidelio,” is to be played as a preluue tomorrow, while the famous “Leonore, No. 3,” is to be heard between the first and second scenes of Act 11. t* St tt Gladys Swarthout is <o be soloist at the fourth children's and young people's concert by Ernest Schilling and the New York Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra at 10 tomorrow morning via CBS. The mezzo-soprano Is to sing two arias from Thomas' opera, “Mignon.” The program is to open with “The Saracens,” by Edward MacDowell. and is to include Strau-s’ satirical tone poem, “Till Eulcnspiegel”; the recent overture, “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” by Roy Harris; “Clouds” and “Festivals,” from the Nocturnes for Orchestra, by Debussy, and compositions by Eiechheira and Mary Howe. a a a SHORT wave listeners in Denmark and Sweden have requested that “Five Hours Back,” NBC's International week-end program be brought to them. Asa result Scandinavian stations are to carry the broadcast, which may be heard over the WEAF network at 11:30 tomorrow morning. An orchestra under direction of Frank Black, Arlene Jackson, singer; a quartet and a chorus are to present a program of modem American music. Vc a. .
wanted to resign from a sewing circle, but couldn't because her friend who had introduced her to the group would gossip about her. She and this friend had been guilty of certain indiscretions in their younger days and she feared these would be revealed. The Voice’s answer was full of common sense. "Get up in the meeting,” he advised, “and resign formally, thanking your girlhood friend for introducing you, reminiscing about your girlhood days, emphasizing the fact that you and your gossipy friend were inseparable then, and that what one did the other did. Then you can leave the club sure that your friend will be the first to defend your reputation.” a a a THE talk by Communist Secretary Early Browder on CBS last night was a newsworthy radio event. Following its policy of allocating air time to representatives of all political parties. CBS aired at 9:45 the first Communist talk carried by a nation-wide network, presented Secretary Browder from a small subsidiary studio when opposition forces picketed its major New York officers. A few newspapers and many politicians yesterday denounced CBS for broadcasting the talk. March of Time gave it furtner publicity on CBS at 9:30. At the same hour tonight, Hamilton Fish Jr., of New York, is to reply to Mr. Browder’s remarks.
