Shires to Act as Mat Boss Art Named to Handle Big Fellows in Two Bouts at Armory. The semi-windup and main go mat encounters at the Armory next Tuesday night promise such an abundance of action that Matchmaker Lloyd Carter of the Hercules A. C. today prevailed upon Art (The Great) Shires to serve as referee for the two bouts. Shires served as third man in the ring for the headliner at the Armory two weeks ago and demonstrated that he is as capable as any referee who has ever worked here. The “Great One,” who is a colorful f’gure in his own right, kept the grapplers going every minute, and drew a big hand from some 3,000 fans. Art was a star a few years ago with the Chicago White Sox baseball club and later played in the American Association George (Cry Baby) Zaharias, 241, will attempt to halt the popular Irish Pat O’Shocker, 227, in the feature clash scheduled for two falls out of three. Otto Kuss, 228, former Indiana University ace and a favorite among local and state fans, goes against an acijj test in meeting Frank Speer, 235, Atlanta, wellknown goat-getting, in the semiwindup. Ernie Zeller, 22 Terre Haute, opposes George Tragos, 215, St. Louis, in the opener. Patty Berg Takes on Veteran Rival Ace Golfer and Mrs. Hill in Semi-Finals. By United Press ST. Frorp this quartet, Miss Berg and Mrs. Crews were favored to emerge today .to meet in the finals tomorrow. In yesterday’s quarter-finals battles, ordinary golf served Miss Berg amply to defeat Jean Bauer, 5 and 3. Mrs. Crews downed Sylvia Annenberg, 4 and 3; Miss Miley eliminated Jean Cothran, 2 up, and Mrs. Hill called on her magic putter to triumph over Kathryn Hemphill, Columbia, $. C., 1 up.
