Roof Plans Contest for Indian Dance Winning Couple to Make Tour of Several Large Cities. The of a series of national dance contests, sponsored by the Long Research Foundation of Chicago, is to be held at the Indiana . Roof ballroom March 17, Cash prizes and a silver cup are to be awarded winners. The winning couple Is to make a tour of i several larger cities to demonstrate ; the dance, titled the “Dee-ghee.” The routine is based on a native 5 dance of India, discovered by AdI rlan C. Williams, cameraman, who £is making an educational picture for the Foundation. Mr. Williams , thought that the Indian “love dance” . might be arranged for a ballroom and sent back films of the ceremony. Instructions in the dance are to be given Roof dancers starting Tues- > day, and arc to continue each night , for a week from 7:30 to 8. Frederick . and Velia, local dance team, are to i give the demonstrations. The picture Mr. Williams is filming is to be seen here soon in a s charity showing. It demonstrates ways ot making bread as employed by natives of 60 countries. Hoosier Plays With Hampden Former I. U. Student Comes Here Tomorrow. £ Herbert Virigran, who plays the ' role of a cavalier in Walter Hampden’s “Cyrano de Bergerac,” which his to give afternoon and evening L performances at English’s tomorrow, tonce trod the hoards of the Indiana * University theater. Asa student in the law school, Mr. Vingran appeared first in John 5, Galswothy’s “Escape,” in 1928, under the direction of Prof Lee R. Nor- , velle, now director of the Federal Players. In 1929 Mr. Vingran was assistant ■ director of “Garick Gayeties,” at the .university, and also was master of .ceremonies. Although Mr. Vingran, a native of .Fort Wayne, studied law, Professor ■Norvelle said today that he always . wanted to be an actor. After graduation he went to Hollywood and appeared in several film roles. r ast fall he went to New York and landed a part in Mr. Hampden’s cast. Chinese General Is 'Good Earth' Adviser Times Special HOLLYWOOD, March 6.—Co-oper-ating with Hollywood's producers of the motion picture, “The Good Earth,” the Chinese government has lent Gen. Theodore Tu of the national army as technical adviser. Many properties and architectural details have been imported from China to lend authority to the settings, and hundreds of tests have been made of Chinese players recruited from all parts of the Pacific Coast. Final selections are being made for the nine principal roles in support of the stars, Paul Muni and Luise Rainer, who are to appear as the Wang Lung and O’Lan of Pearl S. Buck’s popular novel. In ail, there are to be nearly 70 speaking parts.
