GLEN R, HILLIS ENTERS G. 0. P. RACE IN STATE Kokomo Man Seeks to Be Named Candidate for Governor. T i' Fprrit.l KOKOMO, March 3.—Another Pcpubliran candidate for the nomination for Governor. Glen R. Hillis, former prosecutor of Howard County and past national executive committeeman for Indiana of the American Legion, today began his campaign. He announced his candidacy last night. He is the fifth candidate to announce formally. The other three are Raymond S. Springer of Connersville, Gerrge R. Hil> of Michigan City, H. H. Evans of Newcastle and Elza O. Rogers of Lebanon. Forest A. Harness of this city, who conducted the government's case in the Prosecution of Samuel Instill :n Chciago, and Prof. J. Raymond Schut.z of North Manchester College, indorsed Mr- Hillis. A resolution backing him as a candidate was adopted unanimously by the Howard County Republican Central Committee. Sees Taxes As Problem Stopping the upward trend of taxation is the greatest problem faring the state, Mr. Hillis said. “We all know,” Mr. Hillis said, "that the so-called reorganization’ of our state government has twisted it out of all recognizable form as a government of the people. It has made possible the building up of a tremendous personal machine under the domination of a few men. "This usurping of our government is admitted to be for the ‘perpetuation’ of that small group seeking continued power and not in the sole interest of good government. "Proper authorities and duties must be returned to proper officials elected by the people and responsible to the people, and we must restore government in Indiana by law and not one dependent upon the whimsical edicts of ambitious men.” Born in Miami County . Mr. Hillis was born on a farm in Miami County in 1891. While he was young his family moved to Howard County. He attended Indiana University after he was graduated from Kokomo High School and for a. time was principal of the West Middleton High School. He left the university to serve overseas with the Rainbow Division and completed his Jaw course after the war. He was elected prosecutor of Howard County in 1928. In 1932 he was a candidate for the Republican nomination for congressman from the Fifth District,, but was defeated by Prof. Schutz. His wife is the former Miss Bernice Haynes, daughter of Elwood .Haynes, credited with inventing and jtieveloping the first American autojmobile. They have four children, IMargaret, 14; Elwood, 10; Robert, 7, and Joseph, 3. Mr. Hillis is interested in a number of northern Indiana enterprises and belongs to numerous clubs and fraternal organizations.
