STOMACH ILLS WAVE THOUGHT AT PEAK HERE Approximately 5000 Persons Are Affected, Board Estimates. The wave of stomach and intestinal disorders, which has troubled local citizens for three weeks, probably has reached its peak. Dr. Herman G. Morgan. Health Board secretary, announced today. This malady, ga.stro-ent.eris, now Is attacking approximately 5000 persons. Dr. Morgan estimated. Reports from other health offkes show the infection is unusually prevalent throughout the Middle West. Records of the city health department. reveal this is the sixth time In the last 18 years that the city has had a widespread visitation of the disease. Case histories usually show. Dr. Morgan pointed out, that symptoms of nausea and intestinal cramp, Which accompany, are preceded by respiratory infections or colds. All Ages Affected All age groups have been effected, lie said, and the disease has been particularly severe on infants and elderly persons. Duration of the Infection may be from a few' hours to several days. “The offending organism seems to be diplo-coccus, which is accompanied in some cases by streppococei,” Dr. Morgan said. “There is no indication the disease Is water-borne. Many families not Using city water have had the disorder.” Although 80 pneumonia fatalities Were reported here last week. Dr. Morgan today predicted the February total would fall below the 126 deaths reported in January. A few days of sunshine, he said, would reduce this toll.
